THE LANGSUANS AGAIN.
We have, through the courtesy of the Poultry
BuUrJin, secured an engraving of thin new breed
of fowl from a drawing by J. VV. Ludlow, a
well-known Knglish poultry artiat. As the
Langabans itepped into fame from England,
the English should Im oomiderud compctont
authority on their pictorial points.
Of the derivation of the Langahan fowl, the
London "'' Stock Journal aayi I "Shanghai
became a treaty port in 1844, but it wat not
until 1862 that a light-ship waa stationed off
the Langahan crossing.. Communication! with
Shanghai and tho light-ship being irregular, the
captain and officer, landed, from time to time,

The following very interesting paper on Ko
diak iiland was read by Mr. W. J. Fisher at a
recent mooting of California Academy of Sci
ences: In April last, I took passage on the whaling
bark, Alt. Wolliuton, Capt. E. Nye, for tho
harbor of St. l'aul, on Kodiak island. After a
two months' cruise along the eastern shore of
Aluska, between Ml. Edgecumbe at the en
trance to Sitka harbor and Ml. St. Elias, and on
the to-called Fairweather ground, during which
wo touched at "Ochek" or Middleton island;
we arrived at St. l'aul on the 12th of June.

a point of land with a solitary tree on its ex
treme end, had been forced far into the ocean.

straita, making navigation dangerous.
On Juue bill we sighted Ouiiok or .uumioion
island. The island is about 16 miles in length
and rises very abruptly from the ocean to a
hight of from 130 to 180 feet The top of the
island seemed to form a platform broken by
numerous low hillocks. It is without trees
but covered with grass. It also has several
fresh-water lakes, and is a gTeat resort for wa
ter fowl. Both the north and south pointa of
the island are prolonged by extensive reefs upon
which the sea breaks heavily. Except in very
calm weather it is diffioult and dangerous to
effect a landing. On account of the great num
ber of Bunken rocks,' vessels should never ap-
purohated some, not thinking anything of the
breed, but more on account of their aiae. Hut
being so pleated with their delicate flavor they
now and then sent a preaeut of somu to their
frwda in Shanghai. Tbeae, in their turn,
elicited the captain and olhoara to bring some
for stook. When the natives became aware
of tin., they thought thev might just aa well
send them direct to Shanghai themselves.
