October. 20 TIIE WEST SIIOEE. Little Courtesies. The art of living together, plcatuirably is greatly promoted by the habitual exchanges of the little courtesies of this life ; they arc never unimportant, never unaccept able, are always grateful to the feeling in every household. Shall brothers and sisters be lesurcful of the feelings of one another Thau those o( a stranger And between a husband and wife, should there be less eflbrt at gentleness of de portment, suavity of manner and cour tesy of expression, than irt extended to outsiders, who have no social claims and may never be seen again? Shame upon any member of any family who neglects those affectionate attentions and suavities of deportment towards the members of the household, and even to the lowest servant, which cannot fail to elevate Ihc giver and to draw from the receiver those willing and spontaneous reciprocities which make family associ ations a little heaven below. E astkii m On iKiuN. This portioi of Oregon is rich in natural resources. Our beautiful valleys, rolling grassy prarics, hidden gold and silver mines, only lack emigration enterprise anil cap ital, to make this portion of Oregon the richest section ol the state. We arc long way from public lhoroughlares, and the natural nflvautagctot our district are not known abroad. The steady march of time will, in the near future, surprise Ihc lirsl settlers ol tins country. " Westward the star of the empire takes its night, and westward a con tinual column of emigration is march ing. I his emigration passes to the shores of the Paeitic, entirely ignorant of nil- cuimuy in which c me. icwa paper correspondents, seldom, if ever visit this portion ol Oregon. In the many pamphlets and "Resources oil Oregon" the entire district East of the Cascade Mountains, and South of Co lumbia and Snake rivers is unmcnlion cd, because the writers have no real know lodge of the land we live in, Grant County Express, Hors Washington Territory bids lair to surpass all other r italic region in the quantity of hops grown, and to equal Kent county, England, in their quality. Mr, r. Hays ot White river, says the Intelligencer, has com inenced to dress Ids crop for the San Francisco market. He has gathered 2 .1,000 pounds from a patch of fourteen acres of young vines. During the past season be has had sixty seven persons, mostly Indians, em ployed in puking hops and their wages have exceeded one thousand dollars, nearly all of which was spent in this city. The l'ugct Sound hops are acknowledged by brew ers to contain greater tonic properties than (hose of California. G. H.
