A FEW CENTENNIAL ITEMS.
From the Boston Juuroalof Commerce. ,
Johnson & Clark, proprietors of The
New 1 Ionic, are accorded the credit of
presenting their wares in the hitndsomcst
pavilion in the whole Exposition, The
architects were Messrs, Harti.e.1 &
Kwwwv, of thin city (Philadelphia!.
Building and ftiniinhing by the well
known fiini of Uaiicroft & IJoyden.
Style of architecture known as the
media vul. The material of the building
is constructed is black walnut. It is 16
feet wjuarc by 25 feet extreme bight.
From the floor springs a beautiful balus-
tnule, enclosing the space occupied. On j
this arc the words, "New Home Sew
ing Machine," in gold letters. Running
up from the balustrade and supporting
the frieze and superstructure arc 12
massive columns, relieved in gold and
ornaments dividing each sitle into three
equal spaces, the central one forming
entrances, the others draped and having
the apjiearance of open windows.
From the frieze of the roof slopes to
wards the centre, on each side meeting
an elegant band of rich carved work,
from which springs a dome, encircled
at the top by a richly designed cornice,
On the summit of the dome is an ele
gantly carved figure, five feet in height,
representing Peace with out-stretched
anus, holding a laurel branch. The
interior of the edifice is in keeping
with the exterior, arranged as an ele
gant drawing room. The slope of the
roof above is of plate glass, giving free
access to the liht. From the centre of
the dome stispendH an elegant chan
dulier. The Hour is covered with rich
carpet. The cost of the building and
furnishing was nearly $s,ono. So much
for the casket; now iW the tontents.
Fifteen Venn ago the gentlemen com
prising the firm of Johnson, Clark &
Co., realizing the important position
sewing machines must occupy, determ
ined on commencing the manufacture
of the "Home Shuttle," which has
achieved an honorable name, and their
late improved machine has met with an
. unprecedented wile in every part of the
world. Thev also are receiving large
orders for " The New Home," which
combines all the essential qualities of
liiM-classmachines,iloing a wider range
of work thiin other machines, Every
part is nude interchangeable. Only
lite best materials are used. Wearing
parts are hardened and constructed with
a special view of procuring easy running,
durable, simple and iilumst noiseless
machines. All their machines on ex
hibition are superbly finished anil orna
mented in novel designs. The manu
facturers fell justified in an unusual out
lay to attract the attention of visitors at
the Exposition, having the fullest con
fidence tn their merits.
