OPINIONS OF THE PRESS. "A Journal of Army Ltff," fa the tltl of a book written by Dr. R. Ollsan, of Portland, who was connected for many years with tht armv as a surgeon, and keut an Intonwiin. Journal of bin experiences of army life. ThU Journal Is pi)ltinlied In a large aud handsoma vuniiue mm n-cucn ninny iiiiereniinif auveniurct, KlvlDK not only an Idea of life in camp and gurrt. son, and In various portions of the far we,'L among tribes of hoHllie Indians, but aboundl In " moving accidents by flood and flftld," alwa i iiiicreBiuiK mill Muiueuiims tiinuing Wlin exci rt meiiL Dr. JIIhiui's exuerliinnn novor. thn tin t when the Indian war raged fin Houlhern Orrgc and Is therefore of more than ordinary lnteresc to ' the people of Oregon. We can commend it toa I those anil Ihev are the rule mthor ihnn th. I excepllon-who are Interested In field Rports ana wild life In the Far West. Dr. Qilnan Baa bees i for many years established In the BUccewfU , practice of medicine at Portland, and relieve, 1 the monotony of his professional labors by con- 1 piling and giving to the world this Journal of lb ; events in which he look part In years gone by. (i.u'nciir farmer, j Oregon readers will enjoy tn particular that f art of the volume which refers to our own ndian.war of HiVJ-rt. It recalls to memory cvenli that were of thrilling Interest at the time, ind names that were then upon every tongue, but many ot which have been almost forgotten. The work Is elegantly printed and has a numb of line engravings. Orsgonian, As its title Indicates, It Is a history of annr life as observed by the author, and gives a most complete and Interesting account of the Indian wars of our State and Washington Territory from 1K55 to 18S8. It cannot fail to be of Interest to ill pl(lOregonlans, and beside to those who desln Information as to the early life of Its ploneen. The book Is handsomely bound, printed on clear type, and Is In every way worth the subscription prto, and will amply repay anyone to read lL in aftwrrprtie. We regard this as a book of rare Interest. ine Jiiciic enrunan Ad In connection with the evanls In nrhih h Immediately concerned, he has given us quite an eneyclooedlae account ol current events in ths army and navy, throughout the borders of tat country and on the high seas. The Journal la eludes an account of the Indian war or 1865-4, is Oregon and Washington Territory. The Doctor was an active participant In the stirring event of thoso years, In Southern Oregon, and hi relations are intensely Interesting. The Oregon Statcman, Our space wilt not allow any analysis of this work nor anv extendwifitmtB tn,m t. .. are sure It will pay the man who will read It. both In pleasure and edification. We claim that the doctor has written an interttting and awtrtd hook. It Is full ot adventure trips through naw and wild regions hunting and fishing excursions-dealings friendly and otherwise with many w me inntun iriOOS, DOtll Side Of tht Kocky Mountains. It Is a useful book heeniu It nhmniniM ikmi truthfully and graphically a phase of life and the ( manners of a people which will soon be a matter l of antiquarian research and not ot every day 1 experience. There are boyi living now who I bi'foreihelr heads are gray will see our counlrr ; without .a frontier life or more than a scattered Indian here and there. ............. , uvduuruniui Army IjllB - is a uselul tKMik because It puts this frontier 111 before the boys who are boys now In a real and hea thful way. It Is a good antidote for all tn "O Iyer Opilc" absurdities and Impossibilities which create the most unreal and unhealthy views of such a life In the mind of our boys. Here is a real story told in a simple manner portraying the Inevitable hardships and priva tions ju well as the awful temptations and awful failures and ruin Incident to such a life; and last of all the writer's own example In enduring the hardships without a murmur and of coming through all temptation unscathed Is one which must Influence the reader. Ho unaffectedly and modestly is the whole told and so little did the writer think of himself that we fear he will hardly thank us for calling attention to it, Th doctor will pardon us If this commendation mar lead mothers to put the book In the way of their boys and if we assure hira that In our poor Judg ment the book Is such as will oounteiaet much poison from the untrue and sensational books of adventure now too commonly thrown in the way of boys.
