make the local district the banner
school in Jackson County
With the approach of fall, comes what we all used to
dread, school and the new teacher. Do you remember,
dear reader, just how you felt on your first day at school
and on the first day of every term thereafter?
We wonder just how many of our readers attended the
Jacksonville school twenty years ago, and how many lat­
er attended school in the building now occupied by this
paper.
One thing we must remember is that the conditions ex­
isting in your school days and at present are entirely dif­
ferent. This is the day of push, pep and get-along. But
sad to say, the condition of our school grounds is no bet-
ter than ten or twenty years ago.
The site for the school house in Jacksonville is one of
the best, if not actually the best in the county. Situated
on a knoll and surrounded by a grove of oak and pine
trees, we doubt if a better location could be found in the
entire state.
But what we are driving at is wny not keep the good
work going and improve the appearance of the grounds,
and in fact make our school a strictly modern, up-to-date
school. Tap the city water, plant a few flowers and
shrubs, sow a little grass seed, and the appearance is im­
proved 1000 per cent. The pupils in their spare time
would be very glad to plant and take care of the flowers,
etc.
Several years ago the voters of the school district auth­
orized the installation of modern toilets and drinking
fountains of the bubbler type, but for some reason or
other the school board failed to act. Now, nearty every
one in Jacksonville has a relative in school and if you
wish to safeguard the health of that relative, it is your
duty to urge the installation of modern conveniences in
our local school. Don’t wait until another epidemic
breaks out. You have proper sanitation in your home,
why not in the school?
Now this coming term let everybody take an active
interest in the work and activities of the local school, ,
