Washington, March 2(1 The war de partment resolution extending opera tion of the selective draft act by re quiring registration of men reaching 21 years ot age since June 5, 1917, was brought up in the senate today, with senator New, of Indiana, speaking in support of his amendment for compul sory training of men between the ages of 19 and ’1. Senator New declared it is impossi- bl ■ to predict the size of the force that w, t be necessary for the United States to win the war. The djbete was bri- f and no action was taken. Senator Thomas, of Colorado, he had been opposed to compulsory mil- iiary training, but “that his convictions on the subject had undergone a com plete change. ” He believed that it would soon become a national necessi- t •. The amendment was characterized by Senator Myers, of Montana, as “one of the best and wisest suggestions" that has been made since this country en tered the war. “In my opinion we should now be training 5,000,009 men to protect this co intry,” said Senator Frelinghuysen, of New Jersey. “Before we win this war we will need 5.000 000 men, ” asserted Senator Myers.
