The second trial of Mrs. M. M. Gar­
wood, charged with conspiracy in the
burning of a house at Ashland, last
winter, held Monday and Tuesday, re­
sulted in the acquittal of the defendant

and her sister, Mrs. Dryfuss plead
guilty before the first trial and endeav­
ored to throw the blame of the burning
on Mrs Garwood, who they claimed
had engineered the whole affair.
In the ease of the State vs Chas.
Gay of Medford, probation officer of
Jackson county, indicted by the grand
jury for contributing to the delinquen­
cy of a minor, on trial in the circuit
court Wednesday, the court directed
the jury to bring in a verdict of “not
guilty,” motion to that effect having
been made by defendant’s counsel who
alleged that not “sufficient evidence”
had been submitted to justify the case
going to the jury: this is about equal
to the old Scotch verdict of “not pro­
ven”. A large crowd was present at
the trial, many of the details of which
were racy enough to satisfy the most
depraved taste. The directed verdict
was due to the fact that the statements
of the complaining witness were not
coroborated by other evidence and as
she was plainly an accomplice, the court
had no option in the matter.
