Fick, The case of the State of Oregon vs M. M. Garwood indicted for arson, which occupied the court Monday and Tuesday, was given to the jury Wednesday morning, resulted in a dis agreement. The jury was out 12 hours and it is said, was about equally divid ed in opinion as to the guilt or inno cence of the defendant. Mrs. Strick- fadden and Mrs. Dryfuss, who were in- | dieted for same offense, confessed their participation in the crime and sought to lay the blame on the defendant, Mrs. Garwood. One serious defect however was the lack of any evidence to show a motive for the crime, or any benefit to the defendant resulting therefrom. The defendant on the wit ness stand was alert and met the cross examination with entire good humor and although the prosecution tried all kinds of stunts to get her to contradict herself she was ready with a logical explanation for every seeming discrep ancy.
