Three Billion Dollars Lassen Peak In Mineral Production Brea's Forlh Again In 1880, when the output of the min es of the United States barely exceed ed in value one third of a billion dollars the first director of tne United States Geological Survey made this prophecy: •‘The mineral industries of the United States will soon reach an annual mon ey yield of a thousand million dollars of value.” Speaking before the American Min ing Congress in December, 1907, anoth- e- Director of the Geological Survey referred to the probability that that year would mark an epoch i t the min eral industry by reason of the mineral output reaching two billion dollars in value, and later the complete statistics verified this statement. Now les than 10 years later the advance estimates submitted by the Geological Survey to the Secretary of the Interior indicate that the total value of mineral produc tion in 1916 may reach the three bil lion dollar mark. Trainmen report that Lassen Peak erupted with tremendous force Tues day following a series of violent inter nal explosions. A stream of heavy black smoke swenty miles long poured out within a halt Lour, indicating that the great sealed crater on the top has been blasted open. It was by far the greatest eruption since May 22, 1915. The whole top of the mountain apparently belched smoke. The great crater was scaled in 1915 following a series of eruptions,—Tid ings. A swarm of ineteols that appear-’.! on Feb. 9. 1913, was regarded ut the time us very remarkable on a count <>f the great, distance it was traced in too earth's atmosphere. It was first seen iu Saskatchewan, western Canada, and .oemed to bo traveling southeaster!.- as It was also reported from l ermue i From the additional rscortls supplii . by seamen W. F. Denning, the Englisii authority on meteors, lias concluded that it continued in view during ut least 5,500 miles of its flight. As the visible stream could at no time hair, been more than about 100 miles high It must have followed the eartliX curvature, and the curious Idea has been advanced by Garvin J. Hurns that it was really captured by the earth us a group of hitinltestimal satellites. The meteors may thus have passed around the globe several times before reach ing the surface. It is supposed that the orbit of the stream nearly coincid ed with that of the earth and that con sequently the velocity of fall through our atmosphere was small. Often it forces the leaves to sag to the shelf when pushed unduly. It is just as bad for books to be too loose on a shelf, as they warp, and the spreading leaves encourage dust.
