COUNTY COURT Salem, Or., July 27. —For the first time since abolition of the penitentiary its whole population of phjsically able convicts is furnished withjemployment. I n all there are 520 prisoners, and al), save four,who are physically incapacit ated, are working. Approximately 200 are engaged in pulling flax, and it is estimated that the harvest willbecom- plete in 10 days. The remainder are at work crushing rock for road improve ment work for the institutions, and in constructing a cement flax plant, to be installed in the prison.
