Dancing at Berlin’s Zoo. A Doctor’s Last Remedy By JOHN TURNLEE Did you ever notice a boy and girl love? I mean a real boy and girl, the boy, say, fourteen und the girl nbout thirteen. I am a country doctor. One of my patients was Mrs. Baxter, a widow with one child, a boy. When I called to see her this little fellow, Alan, and a little neighbor, Effie Barnes, were u«ually playing together either lu the h"Use or outside. The town In which we lived was really a very small village; conse quently I had many opportunities to observe the children for the next few years, during which they were most of tho time together. Then when Alan wus seventeen lie went away to college I wished that Etile could go uwny to some educational In stltutlon, too. for I knew that while Alan nud she would remain the same persons they would differentiate. Alan would be developed, polished, mentally nnd In manners, while Effie would be the same plain little country girl. After Alan entered college I saw no more of him except lu vacation, but 1 continued to see Effie every now and again. She wiis the same demure lit tie body she bail always been, except when Alan came borne: then she would brighten up. But this brightening last ed but" or a year or two. Alan nt each return showed himself different from what be was the time before. There was a constant shedding of the farm er’s boy. a putting on of the educated gentleman Yet he found Effie the same except In bodily development Her speech was no more artificial, her manners no more studied than wbeu be had first left her. There was the same Innocence in her. the same depth of feeling, the same love But bow could these count ugalust the training mentally anil the more Iiollslied manners of the girls ■with whom Alan wr.s being thrown 'every day) I Judged that love bad never been spoken between them. It bad only existed, Altin on returning to bls mother's farm always spent some time with bls former sweetheart, but not as he bud been used to doing There was a certain constraint be tween them I noticed It nnd knew the cause. Effie hud fallen behind him. My heart bled for her, but 1 couldn't Illume A Inn Indeed, I fancied that while he did uot analyze the facts as I did be regretted them. 1 think he would have liked to see Effie lay aside a certain plainness there was nbout her nud put on something of finer tex tune. 411 the time Alan was In college n Sejm ration was going on between the two Rivers, not visible to their friends generally, but very plain to me, who hnd learned the secret they did not know themselves—their child love Then Alan came home after being graduated anil talked to me about studying the profession of medicine He decided to do so nnil went away again, not to return except once, to bid farewell to I i I m mother, who was dy Ing. He could thought he she could not get <m without him Alt er he left for the medical school she seemed to me to lie as one who hnd suffered a great grief Then, during several years uftei lie hud graduate.; mid was pniclivllig Ins profession 111 11 distant city, slit* seemed to me to be gradually wasting uwny Finally tier parents thought she should have treat meat by 11 doctor 1 was called In to see tier—1. who could diagnose her case 011 wlint 1 hail observed years before. 1 went through the usual formula partly from habit, partly because I did uot consider It wise to tell the truth J felt her pulse, looked nt her tongue, thi'ii. taking out my prescription blank 1 wrote 1111 order for 11 mild tonic, charging her to take II regularly three times n <tny Then 1 left Iter, wonder Ing what I might really do for tier She gradually sank away till at last I made up my mind that If the cniise of lier malady could not hr removed she would die. I resolved on an eipe ilient to try to remove that cause. I wrote Dr. Baxter that I hnd a |>n tlent under my care whose case was pii'zllng me 1 wus aware that as a eomitry doctor I was In statu quo while tie. having recently been grndii atid from one of the liest medical schools In the country, was uti a hlgliel pl uie In the profession than 1. Would be ruu down to tils old home long enough to give mu the benefit of bln din gnosis? He came Immediately.
