Little hope was entertained here today for the safety of 120 men »’ho were buried under tons of debris yesterday as the SATURDAY. Rescue squads of the Unite I States bureau of mines are working with Mine Superintendent William Carter and his men. The victims include one of Carter’s sons. Up to this noon only 30 corpses had been recovered. Ninety-three men escaped alive. They told horrible stories of crawling through three miles of debris filled tunnels, many of their companions dropping by the wayside overcome by poisonous gases. State troops and two companies of rescuers, aided by scores of volunteers, are working from the Court and Mingo entrances, two miles apart. The Mingo entrance afforded the chief avenue of escape. Reports here from Pittsburg say members of the government's rescue squards there offered aid as soon as the explosion was reported, but that the company declined. No progress in the rescue was made, however, un til the squads of the United States bureau of mines reached here last night. The rescuers repeatedly were forced to climb over huge piles of debris in reaching bodies and it is feared that many of the dead are buried under the wreckage. Portions of the mine are being bratticed so fresh air may be forced through the passages. The recent tragedy in our midst has brought to mind the ever recuTing question as what is needful to instill into youthful minds a proper conception of the duties of the individual to society and the obligations he owes to the government under which he lives. It seems to US that instruction and training along these lines should be a much a part of the education of the child as are the common branches taught in our schools, and that the child, beginning at an early age, should be taught and n ade to realize that each individual is one of a multitude of atoms composing the commonwealth and that as to each atom is guaranteed the rights of personal liberty and personal security so is each atom bound to respect and obey the mandates of the commonwealth as express ed in our laws for the safeguarding and maintenance of those rights so guaranteed. He should early be taught that when the laws enacted by the people or their repre sentatives are violated that punishment is due and that the duty of the offender is to submit himself to the tri bunal of that commonwealth whose laws he has outraged. Resisting an officer in the execution of lawful process is in a moral sense an act of rebellion against the state, en tirely unjustified. It is understood that members of the jury that heard the evidence were in favor of awarding heavier damages, but that a compromise was effected on $500.
