London, gives rceurate account of the
"Oregon'’ system, recounting its pro-
grery and achievements from 1902 up
to the present time and cites many in­
cidents shawing the application of the
svstern. The following is thv closing
paragraph of the article in question:
"In fine, Oregon contends, and I be­
lieve with good reason, that direct leg­
islation cured for her all the legislative
reforms tor which other state? are
struggling; that public opinion is su­
preme; that waste has been abolished;
the ’bess' driven out of politics; and a
higher type of official han been evolv­
ed. What wonder, then, that the eyes
of every student of popular govern­
ment, from China to Peru, should turn
to remote Oregon with expectant hope
and grateful benediction.”
To Help Children.
An inexhaustible mine uf plea«ure in
open for the boy or girl who loves good
books and has access to them. With­
out effort on the part of the parent
they are kept off the street and from
the company of the idle and vicions
and are storing their minds with use­
ful knowledge, or are being taught
high ideals and noble purpoaes. Thus
they develop into men and women who
are an honor to their parenta and wor­
thy citizens of one great republic.
Such is the product of a Free Public
Library. Is it not worth the small
pittance it will coat? Many a laboring
mas spends more money in a week for
tobacco than the maintaince of the Li­
brary would 7ost him in n year. Is
not the education and the development
of our bright boys and girls worth a
little self-denial?
We all desire that our children shall
have better oppoitunites than we have
had and not have to work as we have
worked. Here is an opportunity to
help them help themselves, which isthe
very beet help that can be given anyone.
Let’s be "boosters” and help our­
selves, help our town, and help our
boys and girls by unitedly supporting
the library proposition.—Iowa Library

Why He Retired.
An Illinois editor retired from -journ-
alirm and his •‘Rood-bye” is chronicled
in the following language; The under­
retires from the paper with the con­
viction that all is vanity. From the
hour his paper was started to ths pre
sent time he has been solicited to lie
on every given subject, and can't re­
member having told a wholesome truth
without diminishing his subscription
list or making an enemy. Under these
circumstances of trial, and having a
thorough contempt for himself, he re*
tires in order to recruit his moral con­
stitution.—Ex.

per cent per annum, payable semi­
annually, which interest may be evi­
denced by interest coupons attached to
such bonds, and which bonds and in­
terest coupons may be substantially
in the form designated in the order of
the County Court for Jackson County,
Oregon, calling said sleet ion, which
order was duly made and entered of
record in the County Court of the State
of Oregon for Jackson County, sitting
for the transaction of county business,
at the regular August, 1911, term of
said Court, which convened on the 2nd

was made and entered on the 3rd day

held in each election precinct in said
county, beginning at the hour of eight
o'clock in the morning on the 30th day
