Thursday was Thanksgiving Day, and in memory of
the time honored custom as well as in obedience to the
proclamation of our chief executive, the day was observed
by at least a partial cessation from the active labors of a
busy age. Most of the business houses closed at 10:30
and religious services were held in the churches. As a
nation the United States has many things to be thankful
for, occupying as it does a foremost place among the
nations of the earth we can safely say that in no other
nation of equal prominence exists such conditions of peace,
safety, and general prosperity, unmarred by any revolution
or war either actual or impending; we havq only to look
to conditions in our sister republics of Mexico and Brazil,
to realize some of the blessings we enjoy. Locally, the
people of Jacksonville and the entire valley have many
things to be especially thankful for: bountiful harvests, a
healthful, invigorating climate, pure air and water are
among the blessings for which we should return thanks to
the Bountiful Giver. Added to these are the many conven­
iences and privileges used and enjoyed in our everyday
life [which have become such a part of that life that their
value is only realized when we are deprived of them]
which residents of many less favored regions do not enjoy.

Judge Calkins has made an order
which in substance is as follows:
When an attorney wishes to take
papers in any case under the juris­
diction of the circuit court from the
files in the clerk’s office, he must pre­
sent an order signed by the circuit
judge and must receipt the clerk for
documents taken out.
The reason for the order is that so
many of the attorneys who take out
papers from the files forget to return
them and when the case is called the
papers are missing, often delaying the
business of the court until a hunt for
the missing papers is instituted.
The order is not intended to work a
hardship on anyone, but is simply a
wise precaution taken to expedíate
the transaction of business before the
court.
