Measures are already being taken to eliminate many more of the dangerous features in future, there being no good reason for the reckless exposure of life and property to dangers on that day which are especially prohibited on every other day in the year. It is said that the day is a day of national rejoicing and Thanksgiving for the growth and prosperity of the nation which has sprung up from the foundation laid by our forefathers when they signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, but the liberty claimed by that declaration does not include the right to maim or take human life or to destroy property. It should be rembered as the anniversary of a day upon which a solemn act was done, affecting the destiny of the greatest nation on earth and the welfare of ninety millions of people, and the effects of which promise to extend to countless future generations. Very few persons realize the importance of the act done upon the day, the anniversary of which we celebrate. The big fight at Reno is over, and now the country is ready for a new sensation; let us hope it will lack some of the features of the last one. In this age of the world it is no credit to our boasted civilization that prize fight ing is allowed. It is at best a relic of a barbarous age when “might made right,” deteriorated by graft until it has become one of the great evils of the time. The claim that the fight Monday was a contest which would decide the supremacy of the races, is all bosh. If it decided any thing at all it was simply that Johnson was the better man of the two and not that the black race was superior to the white. The riots reported asoccuring in different parts of the country as the outcome of the affair were a disgrace to a civilized nation. Oil Production.
