Ü □ c Jacksonville Post OFFICIAL PAPER OF THE CITY OF JACK SON VILLE. OREGON Published every Saturday by the Post Pub- ishing Co. J. B. Barnes, Editor Admitted as second-class matter at 'Jacksonville, Oregon. SATURDAY, JANUARY 23, 1909. SUBSCRIPTION One year, by mail.................................. 11.50. A farmer near our town recently hired a lad to help him do chores. One morning he told him to take some salt and salt a calf out in the pasture. The boy took a quart of salt with him and thoroughly rubbed it all over t e calf, working it into the hair. A gang of colts in the pasture scented the salt and got after the calf. They licked all the hair off the calf and near ly took the hide off too. The Happy Farmer cover a sufficient period, a farmer would go to the postoffice and get mail for everybody in his community and deposit it in a large open box nailed to a tree in a convenient place. This box was never locked and everyone in the community would search through the box for a letter or paper addressed to him. No one lost any mail in those days because everybody was honest. Crime has grown to such an extent that the government officials are ob liged to order the lock boxes in the city postoffices to be kept closed and locked and have placed a penalty on anyone caught tampering with a box belonging to some one else. Business methods have advanced more than has anything else. A man of ability can command almost an un reasonable salary. He must be a man of executive ability, one who is capa ble of advancing new ideas that will benefit the interests he represents. Proper and timely advertising is one of the requirements of the a prosper ous business man. COURT HOUSE of contideiice for the reason that every reader knows we have stood for no- \ thing but what was the best for the State and the people. We have tried to make The Telegram something more than an independent newspaper. It has been that, it has been outspoken and plainspoken as well, but it has likewise been peculiarly the represen tative of the best thought and aspira tion of the people. No paper in the state has taken such advanced moral grounds and none has fought bo con sistently for what was right and de cent. It is on the principle that we have done something to deserve it that we ask you not only to take advantage t»f the proposition Ave have tb make you, but to be kind enough to pass it along to a friend or two with a recommend ation to them to do likewise. Once again we propose a special Mail Order Day, for February 1, 1909. FOR THIS DAY ONLY you can se cure The Telegram daily by Mail Or der Day Rates, as follows: The Daily Telegram (under this offer one day only) by mail, one year, will cost you $3.75. Saturday Telegram only, one year, will cost you $1.25, Subscriptions mailed on February 1, OR ANY DAY PRIOR, will be ac ceptable under this offer. Hoping to receive a prompt reply, and that you will influence your neigh bor to follow your example, we beg to I remain Yours very truly, THE EVENING TELEGRAM JOAN F. CARROLL, Manager.
