LUY& KEEGAN, Props Family Trade Solicited Sole Agents Albany Beer Synopsis of Compulsory Education Law Applies to Whom — All children between and including the ages of nine and fifteen years, and all children between the ages of fifteen and sixteen years | uot regularly engaged in some useful employment, must attend school each i year as long as school is taught in the district in which the parent or guardian lives. Exceptions Children taught the common school branches at home or in a private school or by a private tutor, such instructions to be equivalent to that : given in the public schools. Children that can prove by an examination that they have mastered the common school branches, such examination to be given by the County Eighth Grade Examining Board. Children who are physically unable to attend school, a physician’s certifi cate being accepted as competent evidence. Children between the ages of nine and ten years who live more than one and one-half miles from school, and older children who live more than three miles from school by the nearest traveled road. Truant Oflicert-One or more appointed by the District Boundary Board for districts of the second and third class; compensation shall not exceed $2.00 per day for time employed, to be payed out of the general fund of the county. Truant Officers for districts of the first class appointed by the school board i and paid from the fund of the district. Teacher or principal required to compare such census with enrollment once each month and report to the Secretary of the District Boundary Board the names of all children not in regular attendance at school. Eight unexcused half-days absense during any four weeks constitutes irregular attendance. Secretary of District Boundary Board required to notify Truant Officer. Truant Offices shall within twentyfour hours, serve written notice in person cr by registered mail, upon parent or guardian, directing him or her to send child or children to school on the following Monday, and that the attendance of such child or children must be continuous during the remainder of the school year. At the same time the Truant Officer notifies the teacher or principal that he has served such notice upon the parent or guardian. If parent or guardian fails to comply, the truant officer is required within three days to file a complaint before a justice of the peace, who shall issue war rant and proceed to hear the case in the same manner as other offenders are tried. Penalty Parent or guardian, if convicted, liable to fine of not less than $5.00 nor more than $25.00, or imprisonment in county or city jail not less than two nor more than ten days, or both fine and imprisonment. It is the duty of school officers, teachers, principals, and superintendants to assist in the enforcement of this law, neglect of duty on their part punish able by a fine of not less than $5.00 nor more than $20.00. MCMURRY. Gen. Pass. Agent, Portland Ore. The harness shop of South & Jewell, at Grants Pass was broken into last Saturday night and some tools and some stock was taken. The burglary was not discovered until Monday morn ing when August Bowdin, who had been employed in the shop, was miss ing. Sherilf Russel of Josephine coun ty telegraphed the description of the man to different towns in the valley. Chief of Police Shearer of Medford got a description of the man and made the arrest. Bowdin had sold some of the goods to a Medford harness man claiming that he received the goods in part pay ment for his services. He had a small bundle of goods with him when arrest ed. AT MEDFORD HOTEL Prim Weeks, an Indian from the Klamath reservation, was robbed last Saturday night in the Medford room ing house by an unknown paleface. Weeks made the acquaintance of a white man during the day who evident ly was without money. The Indian gave the man his meals and at night offered him lodgings. Sunday morn ing the Indian’s friend was missing as well as $60.00. Sunday night in the same room Weeks was robbed of a pair of “shaps. ” O. A. C.
