GOVERNMENT INVESTIGATION But it Isn’t the Usual Kind; Il’s Regarding the Water Supply of Rogue River Valley. The United States Geological survey has undertaken an investigation of the water supply available for irrigation end other purposes in Rogue River val ley. Extensive cultivation, coupled with the judicious use of water in por tions of this valley where irrigation has not heretofore been deemed necessary, has given such excellent results as to create and ever-increasing demand for water. This valley has an area almost as large as the State of Delaware, a mean an nual temperate of 25 degrees and a mean annual rainfall of 21 inches. Peaches, pears grapes, and berries of all kinds are grown in great abundance, but the valley is especially noted for the excellent quality, color and flavor of its Yellow Newton and Spitzenburg ap ples, to the production of which the soil and climate appear to be particularly fa vorable. The upper end of the valley is drain ed by Bear Creek and its tributaries. This stream is subject to heavy winter floods, but becomes almost dry in sum mer, and the low water flow has been practically all appropriated. Any scheme to increase the acreage under irrigation must therefore involve the construction of storage works or long, high-line ditches from the streams of the lower part of the valley, where there is a greater summer, flow. Regular guaging stations have been established by the Survey for the pur pose of determining the daily flow as the monthly and annual maximum, minimum, and mean rates of flov. of Bear Creek near Talent, on little Butte Creek near Eagle Point, on Applegate Creek near Grants Pass, and on North Fork of Rogue River at Prospect. Oc casional measurements will also be made on Big Butte, Elk, Evans, Ash land and Wagner creeks and a number of smaller streams. The work is under the general sw rvision of J. C. Stev ens, the distr t hyrographer for Ore gon. Phil Metchan’s Joke. SHERIFF’S SALE. In the Circuit Court of the State of Oregon for Jackson County. John T.
