Two unmounted gun carriages were found
by our troops on Oct. 18, 1H1IH.
Major Day spent his llrst night in the
castlo without even an orderly. In the
mrly evening ho sat on tho stuno breast
work enjoying tho cool sen breezo and
then went to his room, tired enough to
build castles In dreamland. Hardly had
he closed his eyelids in sleep beforo ho
heard a span of horses on tho bridge, lie
muttered something about a funny time
lor visitors ami got up to meet Ills callers.
Hut when ho looked out of the window
ho could set) neither horses nor visitors.
Such an occurrence nut orally puzzled him,
for, although his ears, carefully trained
to hear the faintest noise of tho enemy, on
the one hand, had told him of tho ap
proach of a team, yet, on tho other, his
eyes, which sighted 13 inch rlllcs precisely
on Iho masts of battleships miles away,
could detect no sign of horso or man.

ho was awake. He pinched an arm, and
feeling the test once iiioiv retired for the
night. In the morning he divided to keep
his experience, ft secret, but, if tho oppor
tunity ever came again, to lie moro on tho
nlert tho next time for his mysterious
visitors.
On tho second night. In San Geronlmo
castlo Major Day, therefore, did not fall
asleep at, the usual hour; but, lying on
Ills oot wide awake, listened Intently for
nny unusual noise. Before half an hour
had passed, nearly at the same hour as on
Iho previous night, he detected the faint
rattle of a team on the highway. Soon ho
nvognized the familiar clatter of n span
of horses on the bridge, lie plainly heard
their hoofs strike the stone pavement.
Faster catuo tho team, seemingly with
whirlwind speed, across the bridge and
Into the yard. Sure of his visitors, tho
major could wait no longer', but, spring
ing from liis bed, threw open the blinds,
and peering into the yard shouted In Span
ish, " Hello!" Hut he got no reply. Nor
could he see horse or man. ills phantom
team had disappeared as suddenly ami
mysteriously as If it had driven" right i
through the solid castle walls Into the
dungeon. He made i closer inspection of
the yard. Yet In the bright moonlight,
strong enough to make nrwsinpcr print
readable, ho could not llnd even a strange
shadow. And the Instant ho threw open
tho blinds, moreover, the major heard
only the line of breakers far along tho soa
ooast to San Cristobal fort.
On tho third and last night when tho
span of horses seemed to como across tho
castle bridgo Major Day sprang to tho
window and throw open tlio blinds still
quicker than tlio night before. He wont
so fast, in fact, that he forgot to spook In
Spanish. But his team had already vanished.

place was tho hottest hamlet on the whole

old (imr.-cl between the cowboys and cer

All that was perfectly clear was that two
good sized crowds wero zigzagging nliout
town waiting for some trlllo to start the
fracas. Every mombcr of both parties was
armed to tho teeth and afraid to lay aside
his shooting Irons for a moment lost he
bo taken at a disadvantage. In addition
to the regulation hraco of 45 caliber Colts
most of them carried 'si wed off' shotguns.
These weapons wero very popular in Ari
zona In tho early days and wero ordinary
brooch loaders with the barrels amputated
some eight Inches ahovo tho locks, making
just nlxmt the ugliest machine that mortal
man over gazed into. When loaded with
half a pint or so of slugs, It would kill
everything In an acre lot excopt tho gentle
man directly behind the gun. Nobody ever
thought of firing the things from tho
shoulder, but turned them hxwo at tho
hip, and tho modish way of carrying them
was by a lixip of clothesline tied at one
end to tho belt mid at tho other to a ring
In tho breech pinto. Local dudes used to
go about twirling them like monocles.
Well, this armed pcaco went along with
out any special Incident for over half a
year, greatly to tho disgust of pvorybody.

sonal artillery and kept such a sharp look
out that none of them cared to take
chances on starting a row. That was the
way things stood w hen tho flro department
got ready to givo Its annual ball, which
was the great social event of tho year.

likes to play with reptiles, to get them
thoroughly roused and then to swallow
them nt leisure. It hits a long nnck,
small, slender body, si rung legs and a
powerful beak. Its color Is clear light
gray along tho sides of the head and
throat, wings a brown black, thighs and
abdomen block, breast and tail coverts
white. The cere and baro skin about tho
eyes are yellow and tho legs nnd foot dull
