II. Venner, of Boston, as a Union Pacific shareholder, against the road, in which he is in a small way identi fied. A meeting of tho stockholders of the Union Pacific was held at Salt Luke city, January 10, when authority was given tho Union Pacific board to increase tho common stock 128,000,000 in order to take over the Short Line. This matter will ho considered in tlio early part of next month. To Control Cuban Tobacco. Havana, Jan. 21. Propositions of American capitalists to oontrol tho Cuban tobacco production and manu factures are taking definito shapo. It ia not settled whether this will bo in conjunction witli an English syndicnto or in opposition to it. The plan origi nated with some New York bank, and includes banks in Boston, Wash ington and other cities. At Portland, Or., on the 18th, sailors on the Gorman ship Mnrgaretha told startling storios of allegod cruel treat ment on the part of Captain Itasch. Tho sailors, to a man, rolate a series ot outrages perpetrated since the vessel left her homo port some eight month ago, that if true, whether comraittod with or without causo, are exceedingly startling, cruel and inhuman. They allege that ever since thoy started out they have boon in danger of getting killed one way or another, and they as seit that not for anything could they be induced to again go to soa under oommand of Captain Itasch. Bteelhead Salmon Scarce. Steelhoad salmon are becoming scitrcer as the season draws to a close. So few are being 'taken that the cold storage plants at Astoria have refused to receive any moro, and the quantities delivered of lato weie so small that they did not pay toi tho trouble of handling them. Giant, jr., candidnto for Unitod States senator, died at Oakland, Cal Ho was 79 years of ago. For 16 years Mr. Dent was appraiser of customs at San Francisco. Ho was appointed by President Grant, nnd hold ollioo until retired by President Clovoland. Mr. Dent came to California in 1852. ITorrlng Fishing at Fort Tnwnaond.
