The work of the bureau of criminal Identification at police headquarters lias been greatly enlarged and brought up to date. This is espe cially true of the finger print depart ment, which today is rccogulzed by the police as the best and surest method of making criminal identifications. Al though the IteitilUin system Is still in use by the department, It bus to a great extent been superseded by the finger print system. The department has a collection of more than 190,000 Anger impressions of individuals. These prttns came from Senator Chamberlain's treatment of the thou sands of mothers who voted for him is rather astonishing. In this manner the department's Bngcr print bureau has become a fort of clearing house for other police departments in the coun try. The bureau Is in charge of Inspec tor Joseph A. Faurot. The impressions ure classified accord ing to "whirls." "loops," "arches" or "deltas." The prints are carefully filed and indexed .according to their charac teristics. In a large room In the base ment of headquarters the actual finger prints are taken. Printer's ink Is spread by a roller on the surface of a glass table. The ink is smeared on the fingers of the prisoner, and the Auger impressions are then taken down on paper. All of the fingers or botti nanas of the prisoner are taken. The 'police after exhaustive studies have been able to learn much about finger prints. The system is based on the fact that every human being haa a distinct and individual Impression which differs from that of any other person.
