Editor Monitor I went to the
Pendleton Iiound-Up. It was
really awfully brutal. They had
the Bull Dogging and roping the
steer. When they- roped . him
some times they would turn him
head over heels. Many a steer
had his horn torn out by the
roots and others had the horny j scenes
part torn clear off. They have
one bi,? arena, then a smaller
lone inside of that. They i.would
j drag some of the steer3 around
i and eyery other bump would hit

one of those bleeding horns on a
post. In the wild horse races,
the horses were lassoed, then
they were ridden. Now imagine
these horses that had never had
so much as a halter on them.
Two were killed right there be
fore our eyes. When they ran
together, one broke his neck and
the other his leg. At night in

WHERE'S DEACON JONES
Fred Damm, writing from ltich
land, Kansas, tells the story of a
country newspaper editor, pre
sumably in KanBas, who visited
a large city just after President
McKinley was shot. The editor
took a great interest in newspa
per bulletins informing the pub
lic of the president's condition.
Not long after the editor's re
turn home, Deacon Jones, the
village celebrity, was taken seri
ously ill, and the editor promptly
posted the following bulletins:
10:00 a. m. Deaeon Jones no
better.
11:00 a.m. Deacon Jones has
a relapse.
12:30 p. m. Deacen Jones
failing, pulse weaker.
2:15 p. m. Deacon Jones' fam
ily summoned.
3:15 p. m. Deaton Jones dead
and gone to Heaven.
Later in the afternoons drum
mer happening along, stopped in
front of the editor's bulletin
board and added the following:
4:10 p. m. Great excitement
Heaven. Deacon Jones has
not arrived. The worst is feared.
