AT NEWPORT Monitor's Society Editor Writea of the-, Pleasures of the Coast Resort The Monitor For News All the Time Try INDEPENDENCE First Now that the mid-Summer season is on, Newport seems to be the mecca for Independence vacationists and quite a congen ial colony of Independenceites congregates on the beach every afternoon. Many have cottages; while others are pleasantly lo cated in hostelries, and still oth ers have pitched their tents and are rusticating to their own sat isfaction. Salmon trolling id being en joyed on the Yaquina bay. Many individual catches are be ing made and chinooks weighing over 30 pounds are being landed. Owing to a law passed by the last legislature, not requiring a fishing license to fish in the bays and tidal rivers, every one who can avail themselves of a troll and a boat Is out for the sport, and this promises to be a leading diversion for some time, for the anglers report exciting tussles in landing them. Surf bathing on the beach at Nye Creek is popular and lare. crowds are in the surf every day, although the north wind has prevented the crowds being lar ger, but when a flood of brilliant sunshine comes the breakers never fail to lure large crowds of bathers. The light house, as usual, draws a large number of people. This year a favorite di version for the Summer people is to maka an all day excursion up the beach, where the light Is located, passing part of the time at the lighthouse and apart at Aerate Beach, a little resort nearby. The lighthouse Is about four miles from Newport and offers a convenient goal for those who enjoy walking. The Punch Bowl, although hot 60 easily accessible, has a charm for the beach folk sufficient to im pel them to make the 20-mile trip from Newport, as there are many scenic wonders enroute. Another popular diversion be fore the tide comes in is to pro vide yourself with a pick and d'g for rock oysters, which make delioious stews or frys. One realizes a remarkable con trast between the Western Coast here, and some of the Eastern and Southern resorts, as here conditions remain more just a: God has chiseled them, for the ingenuity of men has not been so Dually engagea to aaa ms share of mechanism to the nat ural beauty. Taken as a whole the writer considers this more wholesome and restful to the one who is tired and fatigued with business cares and seeking rest from mental and physical exer tions. Not so much oare or thought is given to white flannels or im maculate linens here as there, and one is likely to return more strengthened as a result of the rustic freedom.
