violate the corrupt, practice act by having any political ref
nces iu their columns. Wonder if the Oregonian will
again defy the law. Dallas Observer. Ysb, the Oregonian
"again defied the law" as well as practically every other
paper in the state, large or small. What s the use of wor
rying when the big constitution of the United 8tats makes
ample piovision for the freedom of the press.
Parties in Portland advocating the use of a teit book
prepared from the Bible, in the publio schools, advanced
as an argument tha tact that "congress is openeu every
morning with prayer." Of course we do not attribute the
asiuinity exhibited daily by that body to this fact, but if it
ia to be pointed out as a sample of what the effect of prayer
is, we fear it will not prove a strong argument for using

crops are almost beyond conception and alfalfa, timothy,

where in the Northwest.

men who gave their lives in the occu
pation of Vera Cruz. Bearing the
bodies of the bluejackets and marines,
the armored cruiser Montana, escort
ed by the presidential yacht Mayflow
er, having aboard the secretary of the
navy, reached port early Sunday morn
ing and convoyed by the superdread
nought Wyoming, steamed up the har
bor shortly before noon.
The bodies were brought ashore
shortly before 8 o'clock Monday morn
ing and placed on caissons for the
procession up Ilroadway to City Hall
for a brief ceremony there and on
across the Manhattan bridge to the
navy yard fur the services. President
Wilson reached the city from Wash
ington at 7:15 Monday and delivered
the memorial address at the navy
yard.
The feeling that la uppermost," he
said, "Is one of profound grief, and yet
there Is mixed with that grief a pro
found pride that they should have
gone as they did, and If I may say it
out of my heart, a touch of envy of
those who were permitted so quietly,
so nobly to do their duty.''
The head of the nation looked out
over the thousands massed about the
coffins on the parade grounds, and his
voice shook with emotion as he de
clared his creed: "We have gone
down to Mexico, he said, "to serve
mankind If we can find out a way.
