THE INDEPENDENCE Al ON I TOR m Published Weekly at Independence, Polk County Oregon, on Friday. Enlered as Second Ciuss Matter August 1, 1912 at the Post Office at Inde pendence, Polk County, Oregon, Under the Act of March 3, 1879. 0. A. HURLEY, Buslnesi Manager G. 0. DODGE, AstocUte Manager CLYDE T. ECKER, Editor Suoscrlption Rates: One Year $1.50 Strictly in Advance Independence, Oregon, Friday, May 1 1914 TIME FOR A CHANGE The frtate of Oregon in tin- ,a.-t few yeain haa been more fitrtiuiatiMii itH representation in the Heiiate than in tl e House. Whether or not we agree with Johnathan liwtiri.e or (ji'orgi Chamberlain politically we must admit ll I hey have nccotnpln-liod fomething, have achieved a repu tation beyond (he Htnte line an.l in the eonncil- ol iheir jtolitical MbocialeH have coiiniilerahle inlluence. Noloult v can eay'tli name for Uol.ert A. Moot I if he in elected to the Senate. Hut what of the Oregon delegation in th 1 Inline' Ex eepting Mr. 'iniiott yon or we can say but little. Ul courwe, the voterH of Polk county have no voiee in 0, e lection of two of tin congressmen, hut our own representative we help to elect. IWit neither I'olk county nor the oilier counties of thin district have been choosing wisely or well. The great Willamette valley deserves and should have a m ireable, more influential and m ire aggres-ii.e representa tive in Congress than Mr. Ilawley and a the opportunity ban now been given us to make a chance for the belter, we should accept it and profit thereby. Mr. Hawley has !een in Congress long enough, ho it cannot he said that he is an amateur or "green" at thw work. We have not heard jf or liavo lead of a plausible reason why he should again be elected. 1 nen it might he well to remark for the benefit of republicans who look to the advantage of electing a congressman of their own faith that the Monitor doubt very much if Mr. llawley could be re-electe.l if nominated again. Opposing Mr Hawley fr the republican nomination is Hen F. Jones of Kuseburg. Mr. Jones as a member of the Oregon legislatmo made a record, lb; was at once recog nized as a leader and led. . He was able, aggressive anil in iluetitial. lie spent no time in theorizing but wa led in and produced results. 1 l. ,;ept close to tlie people. He trusted them. This is not only evident from his record well known to every person familiar with the j olitical his tory of Oregon but also from the fact that he was a "Num ber One Statement" man from the time that this idea of popular government was adopted and ndoised by the peo ple of Oregon. The election o U. S mators by the peo ple is now constitutional law of thw land, ti i inch needed reform secured by the efforts of progressive leaders of all parties ai d by them alone. Hen Jones is a progressive republican and such lie always will be in victory or defeat. So for the reasons as above set forth, the Monitor be- lieve that the interests of thegreater number would be best nerved by the nomination of Mr. Jones in the place of Mr. llawley. War A'ith Mexico entirely depends upon the whim of the dictator, llnerta. Jf lie can be persuaded to resign or quit, and retire to oblivion forever, then and not until then, will there be peace ami it substantial form of govern ment established in Mexico. Whether or not, thousands of his fellow countrymen and scores of American boys will lose their lives and millions of dollars worth of property be destroyed depends upon this villain. While we do not look with much favor upon capital punishment, yet if Un united Statis is forced to drive Jliiertu out of Mexico at the mcrifice of life and properly, we will regret that the code of citilied nations forbids the proper punishment of the fiend. We can only hope that hell will be as hot for linn as the most pessimistic he 1 theoiist describes it to be.
