Wilberg and French open ed their new lumber yard last fall, putting in new yards and a full stock of all kind-! of building material. They are experienced lumber men of twenty two years exper ience and are building up a large and growing trade, Q. A. Conn has one of the most compl ate stocks of gen eral merchandise to be found in any community and prides himself in the fact that he can meet the price1 of th city stores. He carries ini plemaots of all kinds and states his sales are all that their hop returns PERRYDALE, GRAIN AND STOCK RAISING CENTER Flour Mill, Good Sols, Fine Dairy Herds and Registered Sheep Make Proserity Here Perrydale is in a rich sec tion of Polk county. It has more nice homes, more pros perous fanners, more new homes and better yields in profitable crops than any section of Polk county the size of Perrydale. It his good substantial stores and well ntdeeted stocks. It has a flouring mill, the Perrydale Milling Co., that does a successful and profitable business. It ha a hardware and furniture store owned and managed by Fred llehding that is equal in size to tlnn. carried in towns twice or throe times the size of Pern dale. Il has h genei al stock, nf groceries and dry god where you can and the Christian church has been built here within the lust year, while several store buildings are practically new. Wire for fencing has been sold by our merchant in car lots and rd and alsike clover has done so well that our farmers feel the call for morn intensive farming. Mr. Mc Cro v produced 1000 bushels of clorer seed from his farm, relling at 16 cents per pound last year, bringing $06 per acre. It is no misstatement to say that the farmers of Perrydale are among the richest in the Willamette valley. M. rMmpmn Sr , the father of Ike Simpson, Jaa Williams, the father of W. K. Williams and Isaac Stnats, all settling in 1845. Many others came in the early days, mention of whom may be found in the Polk county history write up. I. M. Simp son owns 5G0 acres of th-? old donation land claim, which he has enlarged by purchase until now he owns 800 acrea of land and W. E. Williams still resides on the old dona tion claim of his father, which he also has made produce profitable crops. I. M. Simp son is a breeder of pure bred Lincoln sheepand high grade Jersey cattle and for feed raise corn, kale, carrots, and beets. IV fore Reason H. Hall had taken up his dona tion land olaim in the late fifties a river Ik at landing was established at this point and it was named hloom ington in 1853, when Eli VV. Poster was the postmaster, and later it was known as Hall's Ferry, this ferry cross inc the river at the foot cf Main street as the town is now laid out. This point in thoe dayi wai an important location from the fact that tho farmers as far east as Seio and went to King's Valley and Tampico made this their supply point. Mr. Hall named the place Uueiia Vita, meaning good view in Spanish, and in 18C2 he laid out a town site ighi blocks long along the river front and sever blockn dt)p. A pottery, a tlour mill and a aaw mill soon came ht-re and stores of every kind were opened . In 1870 Buena Vista had a fire that destroyed aeveial tores, the cause being the re sult of a feud between thoss desiring the destruction of a place culled "Inl Head Gulch" mid those wishing the grocery to stay. Th town was iigain re built, but 1839, Ul'.'O 1W5 again saw destructive fires in the place. In 1S8'J the terra cottn ai,d pottery worka left t h i jsect in for Portland. This is the story of the past, although we would say that the lack of railroads ha been the cause of the slow de velopment of Ihienu Vista. The town ia t-o situated in the midst o fine hop ranches, rich dairy and grain farm and at the mouth of streams where mills would be profit able to such an extent that the one great need of theat has been tansportation facil ities. Now Hut na Vuta is a good trading center, where J. K N-al has tho only tore but handles a laig and grow ing bufinens, and W. S. M -Clain tak)g care of the ne-dn amount of the grain grown in this section Buena Vista has a strong lodge of Odd Fellow-, which was first or gunied in 1808 by V. L, Rigga, A.
