THE INDEPENDENCE MONITOR mbitohed Weekly at Independence, Folk County, Oregon; on Friday. lateral u Second CUu Matter August 1,1912 at tbt Port OfflM t Ind pandancc, Polk County, Oregon, Undtr the Act ot March 3, 1879. O. A. Hurley, Publisher Sr Proprietor SuDicription Rates: One Year $1.50 Strictly In Advance THE MAN WITH THE HOE If there is a time iti the year when thf man with the Hn fmr.ceeds in trertiner in woik t:at counts, it is now garden making, lawn making, home beautifying weather. LOCAL AND PERSONAL Iadependence, Oregon, Friday, Mar. 14, 1913 WHY NOT PREPARE YOUR YARDS NOW? Spring time is coming and with it comeothebt st season of the year for iraprovementH. In front of every sidewalk in Independence is a strip of land that should be spaded or plowed, and put into norne good yard grass, flowers, etc. Now is the time todothis. It would be agc.od plan for the city couno'l this ppring to set asido about two days during the next two or three weeks as clean up and improvement days. The city should furnish teami and wagons to haul Off all the refuse gathered up during those days and the rftRiHants should be notified to clean up their premises. At this time it would be a good plan to have plowed and harrowed the frontyards and the parking space in front of all sidewalks getting things in shape for summer. Inde pendeneo is too neglectful of her residence section. Civic prde should be cultivated and when once the results is shown the fulure is assured in this one respect. The Monitor suggests that, independent of all other recommendations we have made, the city council should re quire the cleaning up of all yards, the refuse from barns, the placing of chloride of lime in all out houses, etc., so as to keep the health of the city in the best condition possible WHAT ARE THE SAD SEA WAVES SAYING They say use salt. One of our exchanges finds that Lot's wife when Bhe turned into a pillar of salt did a good act. She started something. Salt on the fingers when cleaning fowls, meat or fish will prevent slipping; thrown on the fire when broiling steak will present blazing from the dripping fit; as a gargle will cure a sore throat; in solution, if inhaled, will cure a cold in the head; in water is the best thing to clean willow furniture or matting; in the oven under baking tins will prevent their scorching on the bottom; puts out a fire in the chimney; with vinegar will remove sfains from discolor ed teacups; with soda will relieve the pain of bee stings and insect bitea; thrown on soot which has fallen on the carpet will prevent a stain ; put on in freshly spilt on the carpet will help to remove the fpot; in whit-wash makes it stick ; thrown on a coal fire which is low will revive it; used in sweepi.ig carpets keeps out moths, and coarse salt Bprinkled on a carpet that looks dull, when swept hard will do much to brighten it. POLK COUNTY LEADS ' ' Not in one industry alone but in all lines, Polk county leads. While Polk county hops are recognized as the best in the world, she hat a reputation reaching far and wide for her thoroughbred stocje. She excels in jersey and ayrshire cattle, in cotswold and linouln sheep, in angora goats, in noland china nnd berkshire swine, in mammoth turkeys, in blue andalusioiis, plym nith rooks, anconas, Rhode Island reds and wyandott chickens. Fine crops of clover are pro duced. She has recoil breaking yields of potatoes a id every branch of industry is represented. Take the dairying feature alone and it is a success nnd pays the owners of the dairy farms a large interest on the investment. Vegetables maturo well and make record crops. In fact everything does its best in Polk county. Nature t built right in this uook of Oregon, that's why. DOWN WITH BILL BOARDS AND TIN SIGNS If anything makes a town look like"podunk" it is the tin s'gns and bill hoard mania inside of the main business streets of n city. When a man, walking down the street sees such signs on a board between two building as, Imperial's cigars, Copenhagen, snuff, sneezuni.etc,, bo looks for a directory to cee if he bus not arrived in the wrong town. It is a disgrace to have bill boards on your main thoroughfares carrying regged circus posters and tobacco advertisements that Intve become so oi l that the moss is growing out from the cracks between them. The city -hould regu'ate the bill posting busdnes, and civic pride should relegate to the scrap beapthe hack woods, died in the wool, "l'odunk" dead town features that are evidenced by such advertising matter a stated above. PLANS FOR CELEBRATION HERE Independence is due this year to celebrate "Indepen dencePay." For a number of veais we have passed up the big Fourth of July celebration and why not shape up early for a monster meeting, asking all the nearby towns to join us in one big time on this day. While it is a little early, by making arrangements now we can have the support of uveral towns that might otherwise celebrate themselves. Such is sues are not only a benefit to the immediate section where printed, but t- the whole slate since they necessarily attract much attention. There t-hould be more of jut such issues, but as they gen eral! cojt more than they return, theounty editor, few of whom are in the J.
