OUR BIG SPECIAL EDITION
History and development will go hand in hand in this
big special edition of the Monitor. Every Hection of this
country will be represented and atatisucs will be complete,
in so far an we can secure them.
As an illustration of a historical sketch we wish to say
the first history of railroad development will interest. In
18G9the people of Portland, Washington, Yamhill and Polk
counties got together and hacked the organization of the
Oregon Central It. K. Co., which was to build from Portland
to McMinnvillo and later on to Eugene. How Hon Halladay
came in, St building to Ht. Joe and staying there for 10 years.
About. Henry Villard entering the field in 184. How in
1878 the west side narrow gauge was projected by Joseph
Gaston building from Dayton to Sheridan with a branch to
Dallas. How in 1889 it was extended to Airhe, and Villard
builds it on to Portland.
Did you know Polk county in I860 cast 390 votes for
Douglas, 180 for Lincoln, 215 for Preckinridgeand 4 for Hell,
that 528 people voted for the Oregon Constitution and 188
against, that 231 votes were for slavery and 481 opposed,
that only 53 favored negfos free and H81 were opposed?
These are only a few of the first sketches that we have
secured for our early history section of the Monitor's li de
velopment iHoue. The fight for the state capitol, how Polk
oounty was named and formed and how she helped in the
national history. How she helped in organizing the firH
state horticultural and acricultural societies and the men
identified in the movement.
Any early historical notes will be appreciated and you
are invited to give the data you may have. Old papers file
away or old retninscenses will bo appreciated. We are spar
ing no time or effort to make this the best edition ever put
out in a Willamette valley county.

H7.GH SCHOOL NEEDS GYMNASIUM
If Independence holds the position as a school town she
should hold, one of the first steps the hoard should take is
the building of a first cIukb gy mnasium, with ample) room to
accomodate a good crowd of spectators at al I basket ball and
other games. This gymnasium could be built in such a
manner, to be used for all school entertainments and plays
It should bo supplied with hot and cold water baths, with
lockers, dressing rooms, etc. Most towns have a large a
sembly room with their high school and the gymnasium
could be made to supply this defect in this case here.
The gymnasium should be used for the regular exercise
drill work of the school and no town should bo withoutsucl
a gymnasium that can see iti way clear to build such i
building.
THE CITY WATER QUESTION
Much favornbls comment hasbeenmado of our editorial
lat week regarding the placing of a good gravity city
water system in Independence. From expressions made to
us we believe thesentiment is general favoring an ip-todte
city system. Hut fu of the valley towns have t ho water
system they should have and Independence is ia good
financial condition, abundantly able to put in a system such
ai tho city needs, and no step this city has ever taken would
be of so much benefit to the public. Asa revenue producer
a good city watersystem will soon be an asset ofgrcat value.

A NEW PAVING MATERIAL
A state university expert claims to have discovered u
new material to take the place of macadam on the roads.
It is called "puzzolan" and when mixed with Portland ce
ment makes a material stronger ami more durable than
regular paving material. Prof. K 11. McAllister states that
"puz zolan" is found abundantly all over this valley. It is
reported to be much cheapei than other classes of paving
composition.
