THE INDEPENDENCE MONITOR Published Weekly at Independence, Polk County, Oregon on Thursday. Application for Entrjr u Second Claw Matter Made at the Post Office at Inde- pendence, Folk County, Oregon, Thursday, August 1, 1912 G. A. Hurley, Publisher & Proprietor Subacrlptloa Kates: One Tear f 1.50 Strictly in Advance j l ,1, I. . Hi. Independence, Oregon, Thursday, August ,15 1912 Progressive Party a Real Fact Now At Chicago the word Pro gressive was choben for the nevr third party and Theo dore Rooeev el t and Hiram M. Johnson, of California, were chosen as the standard bearers. 1 The entrance of this third party puts book makers, pol- iticians, and gamblers in the dark and money is not free on favorites. Regard lews o . the new party'a platform the influence of the men back the movement and their lead ing followers with the great mass of the voting people is ah' uncertain question and one that is worrying many The hard times in the east is another feature that has ita bearing, and while the western vote is looked upon favorably by the Roosevelt forces as probable territory of the Progressives, we he Ueve, if . anything, the Pro gressive vote will be greater there than here. ' No great newspapers are supporting the Progressive party, but several of the large monthly magazines are back ing them with their very best writers and the ' influence o the' magazine must not be overlooked as a vote getter The platform has leen made after the Republican and Democratic parties have both held their conventions and their platforms' have been studiously dissected be fore any move was made to plan a new -platform for the new party; Iri thU platform they favor the following: JJirect primary fur presi dent, national and state ofli ceis. An easier method of amending the Constitution 'Eual suffrage. ' Restricting power of the 1 " , :. . . r courts. t Injunction in labor dis putes should be prohibited. Opposes child labor, night hour work day, and a depnrl ment of labor. ' Investigation as to high ost of living. Favors 'single national health service. ' IfflVorfl establishment of a federal commission to hii pervise interstate industrial corporation. Enactment of p.itent lav that1 will prevent monopo lies! ravers commission t.. make physical value of rail roads. 'Condemns currency notes through private individuals and opposes Aid rich curren cy bill. Development of national resources urged. Compensation for watt-r rights.- ' Good roads, and exteiifiv freu delivery. Preparation of plan to de velop rivers of country. Railroad controlled fchipj denied use of Panama canal. Favors protective tariff, on noo partisan scientific basis and condemn Payne Aldrich bill and the democratic par ty's tariff as destructive sys tem. Demands immediate repeal of 'Janadian reciprocity act, - Favors inheritance and in come tax. Favors international agree ment, limiting naval rorces and the construction of two battleships a year pending such agreement. Government action regard ing immigration, pensions for old soldiers and sailors and the parcels post. lhe opening ot the re sources of Alaska. While these policies uiake up the issues which will be fought out in the whirlwind campaigns this fall, the rea issue is the man. The prop osition of one man dominat ing a party, disrupting a par ty, controlling a whole peo pie. The real issues, will be fought on the line of the peo pie against the dictator. Doth the parties against Roosevelt's party will make that the issue and it must be met by the Progressives. The protective policy of the new party will tend to solid ify the democratic party into solid phalanx and will leave Woodrow Wilson strong ground or attack against the Progressives. The desertion of Roosevelt by the great Piogressive leaders of the United States will be the great blow to his cause and in our view will cause him to probably take the third place in the presidential race These men were opposed to the abandonment of the old arty, were in favor of n com ironiise candidate if a Pro gressive could have been se cured, and believed that loose velt did nt honestly support the Progresive cause y the course he took. These Hre features that will come before the people before the election in November and will have a potent influence on the vote at that time. There is more than a plat form necessary there must e honesty of purpose and cousistaiH action to satisfy the people. and from Independence to Ruena Vista, should be in a crop. Think how attractive it would look, if as you ride along the Willamette from Salem to I'uena Vista you could see nothing but grow ing crops of hops, alfalfa, clover, wheat, oats, potatoes, corn, pumpkins, and other money making commodities. Good Roads Mean Every thing. Next to good stores and at tractive prices comes good roads to build up a commu nity. a town to succeed must have easy transporta tion to it for the farmer. The roads around Independence are fairly good but, they could be better. The roads across the river are fair but they could be improved The Independence business men could afford to hire au tosor teams and make a tour of investigation all aroma the country here for a dis tanceot ten miles in every direction and see what road building should be done and then see if it could i;ot be done. The way to build up a country is to satisfy the people. The farmers pay the taxes and they like good roads. should get work, it. Tly need Sears and Sawbuck( want your .business but did you ever get a dollar from them? They believe in reciprocity for them but where d ) you come in on the reciprocity deal? short sighted- Locate Your Manufac tories here Men with ness go on to some town alongthe railroad, away from the river to locate their man ufactories They make a great mistake. Two tilings are necessary for success in manufactoring. One is to get your raw material deliv ered to you at the lowest ossible figure, the other is to be where you can mar ket it at the lowest possible cost. These conditions are the very best at Indepen dence. I heretore you have the two methods of transpor tation. 13y scow or raft you can Ining your raw material to Independence for miles at radically no cost. You in -hip by boat or by rail and you can thus undersell and uunerbuv your conun't- itor who is on one line of ailroad and has no water tianspottiitioi'. ihese facts to wiii for Every farm should have a big bunch of chickens. They are great money pro ducers and help dad keep up the expenses, buy calico dresse now and then, and keep the kids in peanuts, popcorn and candy. The first edition of the Independence Monitor is at hand, edited by G. A Hur ley, an old Polk county boy Mr. Hurley surely got out a fine initial number, and one that the town bhould be proud of and gladly Support Dallas Itemizer. The ladder of r-uccesd is climbed round by round, but the poor devil who just puts in his time climbing and does not pick off a bunch of grapes, a few luscious apples a watermellon, or a pumpkin as he goes along misses a good part of the success of living well. Patronise your home town. Dontgo skylarking over the country to buy what you want to wear when you can get it at home. If you cant get it, make your stores order it Keep alter them an make them carry what you want. The way to bring up the home community i? to stick with your home people all the time and stick tight. Oregon's Governor made a ride across the state of Ore gon on horse back and came hack a cjwboy.
