Sperb'ng is erecting a late style awning the full length of the Lerona hottl and bank building. Work was began last week and the frame work is all in place ready for the glass and other materials. Mr. & Mrs. Phillip J. Mul key were in Independence Saturday enroute from the Normal nt Monmouth to Newport where they will spend a few weeks rusticating. Mr. Mulkey is instructor in the Arlington schools has been attending the summer normal course at Monmouth. He will stop in Independence on his wav home, tie was much surprised at the im provement in Independence and stated he thought it would continue to grow. E. G. Pentland, a son of Robert Pentland, one of the pioneers of this section, and a brother of the late Mr. S. L. Brooks, was in the city Tuesday renewing old ac quaintances. Mr Pentland, who is now a traveling cor respondent of the Los Anni es Times has not b en in the city for over 12 years and says it has been 31 since he lived here. His old Dulles friends are the finest he has ever made, he says, and while in Portland he felt bound to come up the river if only for a few houis' visit. Mrs. C.J. Crandall was accompanying him about town and pointing out the old landmarks which had become obliterated by the pavement or new build ings. Tbe Dalles Observer. Williamson, who had his hand badly lacerated last week from a horse kicking him while he was shoeing him, is much better.
