The contrivance in cludes a curved leather holder, into which a small blotter can be fitted, and a strap for fastening the device in place. There are many cases on record of professional fasten doing without food for 40 days. Some few years ago a French soldier, Corporal Desrats, fell Into an old mine-shaft near Brest. He lay there, unable to get out, for 28 days, and that without a morsel of food or drink. Yet at tbe end of that time he was able to call for as sistance, and when got out, could tell his story. With proper care he com pletely recovered. ''According to some naturalist, the squid, or cuttlefish, Is the principal food of the sperm whale. But appar ently the game is not always one sided.
