Tbe Alaskan bears have been hunted with perfect safety from boats among the coastal islands, and they are also comparatively easy to kill along the streams where they come in the fall to catch salmon. In this hunting the hunter lies in wait, and pota bruin from a safe distance. But at that time of the year the fur is not prime. The true sportsman goes up into the moun tain in the early spring, still bunts bis bear and kills him often at close quar ters— unless he gets killed himself. Many hotels niul restaurants In the large cities are eager to secure prime young guineas, and often they are served at banquets and club din ners ns a spec’ s! delicacy. When well cooked, guineas are attractive In ap pearance, although darker than com mon fowls, and the llesh o f young birds Is tender and of especially fine flavor, resembling that o f wild game. Like all other fowl, old guineas are likely to be tough and rather dry. A few large poultry raisers, par ticularly those within easy reach of the large eastern markets, make n practice of raising n hundred or so gulnens each year, but the great ma jority o f gulnens are raised In small flocks of from 10 to 25 upon farms In the Middle West and In the South. Many farmers keep a pnlr or n trio of gulnens more as a novelty than for profit, and from those a small flock is raised. The guinea fowl doubtless would be more popular on farms were It not for Its harsh and at times seem ingly never-ending cry. However, some people consider this cry an argu ment In the guinea’s favor, as It gives warning o f marauders In the poultry yard. In his Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, the learned Rev. Dr. E. Cobhara Brewer, writes upon Piets and Scots: "P iet is not the Latin plcti (painted people). As Piets and Scots are al ways mentioned together, there is no reason why one name should be Latin and tho other Gaelic. Scot is the Gaelic 'agod (a dweller In woods and forests), and Piet is tbe Gaelic plst-lst (freebooters), the two being equiva lent to foresters and freebooters.” C u ticu ra fo r P im p ly Faces.
