T here’s a new exhibit a t the American Museum of N atural H istory th a t tells a great deal about teeth—about thely structure, location, mode of implan tation, growth and replacement, w ith special reference to th e teeth of mam mals. Many kinds of teeth are shown in the exhibit, from th e curious, compli cated ap p aratu s called the “A ristotle’s lan tern ” in vogue among the sea-urchins to the great, cruel fang of the lion.’ The A ristotle’s lantern of the sea-urchin consists of five pyram idal Jaws, each carrying a long, slender tooth of continu ous growth, which moves forw nrd In the Jaws as it becomes worn away th e point. The h o rsesh o e or king crab w ears his teeth on his legs, a t the first Joints of which is a series of spines and sharp points. The food is torn to bits on these teeth and worked into the mouth opening. The lobster does his fletcherlzlng w ith teeth which are to be found on his fourth to ninth appendages. Some of these teeth are adapted to seizing the food, others to grinding it. etc. The exhibit also reveals the littlfPknown fact th a t the beetle and worm boast teeth ns useful and efficient as any. Of course th ere are teeth of many kinds. B ut the t.vplwU tooth of a verteb rate or back-boned anim al, as shown in cross-section, consists of (1) pulp contained In a cavity, which by deposition of lime in its exterior portion becomes (2) dentine, ivory or bone, form ing the body of the tooth, (3) enamel, overlying the dentine on the crown of the tooth, and (4) cement, usually sur rounding th e bas^ of the tooth and sometimes covering p a rt or all of th e enamel of th e crown. The teeth of some animals, however "(the sperm w hale, fo r exam ple), have no enamel w hatsoever. In man, as in most mammals, the teeth are set in distinct, separate sockets, called by th e initiated “alveolas,” and are separated by a m embrane from th e surrounding bone. B ut n atu re has other ways of im planting teeth. The extinct sea reptile known to the scientist as Ichthyosaurus had his teeth planted In a continuous shallow groove, as was th e habit w ith certain birds which lived mnny centuries ago. Modern birds, however, have adopted the fashion of going toothless. A nother so rt of attachm ent of the teeth is by m eans of a bony union of the outer side of the teeth w ith the Inner side of the Jaw. In a fourth case the base of the tooth is completely fused w ith the side of the Jaw. It is an o th er evidence of a beneficial n atu re th a t man, the only creature who is given to having his teeth extracted, does not have his teeth im planted in this la st way. Some anim als have the advantage of teeth which are more or less movable, due to th e fact that they are attached to the jaw s by ligaments. Tills is th e case w ith many fishes and some reptiles. W ith snakes this arrangem ent facilitates the swallowing of the food. Some animals, less fo rtu n ate than man, have only one se t of teeth, which a re expected to la st them through an entire lifetim e. Most anim als, like man, have two sets—a tem porary or milk set and a perm anent set. No mammal has more than two sets of teeth. Generally a tooth is replaced by the form ation below it of another tooth. As th e new tooth increases in size, th e roots of the old one are absorbed until finally it falls out nnd gives place to the new. Most reptiles nnd fishes, how-, ever, are well supplied w ith teeth, having several series, which provides for a more or less continuous loss and replacem ent. T he shark Is not worrteef by th e fea r of a toothless old age, for he has several rows of teeth, one behind the- other, and ns fa st as the teeth in the outer row are lo st they are replaced by those Just back of them. Replacem ent may be accomplished by the form ation of a new tooth beside the old one which is absorbed a t the point of contact until the developing tooth en ters the base nnd replaces it. T h at is the way crocodiles and lizards do it. Or teeth may be formed a t th e back of th e series, these moving forw ard to take the place of those worn away. The teeth of th e elephant are developed a t the back of the jaw , and the en tire row moves slow ly forw ard, the fro n t p art of each tooth coming into use first nnd wearing aw ay ns it is pushed forw ard. W hile six teeth are developed on each side o f eith er Jaw, not more than p a rts of two teeth are in use a t any one time.
