HARDWARE COMPANY Shorty gets a hunch from the Captain FRENCH ARMY BAND COMES TO SALEM Last spring when Secretary Baker was in France an arrangement was msde with the French government to bring to America the French army band to aid in the liberty loan drives and other war work. When the arm istice was signed, permission was granted by the French High commis sion for the band to remain in Am er ica three months, that they might make a tour o f 60 honor cities giving a series o f concerts with two objeets in view, the first to further cement the friendly relations between the two republics, and secondly to raise money for the Foyer du Soldot [the home for French wounded soldiers.] All the money de rived from their tour above actual ex penses is given to this worthy cause. For the Salem engagement the mer chants o f the city raised by popular subscription the full amount tasked by the bend fer their expense an i will in this case turn ever to the fund for the home-coming soldiers all tha receipt* o f the engagement. With one or two ex ceptions Salem is the smallest city in. eluded on the entire tour and the public spirited men who have taken it apon themsalves to bring this splendid at traction daservea much credit fo r their patriotism and should be supported by every citizen in the community.
