C. A. Finley, of Portland, made the filings and adm itted th a t Investi gation extending over several months had revealed th a t a vsry large deposit of hem atite of iron exists. During the week ending December 12 five fatal accidents oht of a total of 510 industrial casualties were re ported to the state accident commis sion. The fatal cases were: Ira Cal vert, Toledo, lum bering; Elmer E. James, Deer Island, logging; Axel Hammerback, Klam ath Falls, logging; Eli Jacobsen, Klam ath Falls, logging; John \V. Lee, Portland, electrician. In addition one death was reported due to an accident taking place prior to the past week, th a t of Thomas H. Mat thews, of Portland, injured on October 15 while engaged in shipbuilding. State Engineer Cupper plans to draft a bill for submission to the next state legislature providing for the abolition of the office of w ater superintendent for W ater Division No. 1. The state engineer was elected to th a t office at the last general election and will qual ify for it and then resign. When his appointm ent was made it was under stood th a t he would undertake to han dle the duties for both the office of state engineer and superintendent of the w ater division on the west side of the Cascades. By doubling up the of fices the salary of $2400 a year for the division superintendent is elim in ated, as well as some of the expenses in connection w ith th a t office.
