J A BIG DISPLAY OF BABY DOLLS T CJ CHARACTER BOY DOLLS DOLLS DOLLS TO SUIT EVERY PURSE BEAUTIFUL LINE OF JAPANESE FANCY 11, R. Patterson of Portland was in Independence this week visiting his parents and friends. Wm. Cockle Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Cockle returned this week from Washington where they attend The surgeon has extracted the Im ed the funeral of a son and brother. partially distributed bits o f shrapnel from your works. The wouuds have healed. The wheels go 'round again, and the clock ticks. But It doesn’t keep correct time. This business of calling “ Time 1” on the Boche means so many broken clocks nowadays that the master-menders can’t keep them on their tables after they’re mended. So the question where they shall sit around while they’re be ing regulated looms large. The Red Cross answers that ques tion with Its convalescent homes. It has six o f these In operation. A suit able place Is found—sometimes do nated—and management and equip ment are provided by the Red Cross, while the Army has furnished disci pline and a never-falling supply e f con valescents. These homes mean that men who are scarcely hospital subjects, yet who can by no means go back to their du ties, have a place that does what "home” does for the French or Eng lish soldier, what "home" does for any one, In fact, when the doctor gets through. You know. He says: “ You're all right now. It’s only a matter o f nurs ing and food.” But you know he’s only looking at the works he's tinkered, and that the soul within you Is grousing as It never did when the body was down nnd out It wants something, and it doesn’t know what It Is. But If It doesu't get It pretty quick the works are going to get gummed again. You know your mother could find out what that dog gone thing Is right away and hand It to you on a plate. But General Per shing won't let you go to her. • • • And the War Department wou’t let her come to you Then you're .aken to a Red Cross convalescent home—and there Is the very thing you wanted 1 But you couldn’t describe It even thes to save your life. It Is a bit o f coddling, and pretty surroundings, and women s faces, nnd light laughter and time to play and all that sort o f thing It Is forgetting the crash o f war and remembering that there are pleasanr, soft voices. It’s even such things as gaily-flowered sofa pillows to Jam Into a corner and mnke a nice lolling place while you read and smoke and alk. It's slippers In stead o f treuch boots, or day-dreams In place o f the nightmare o f killing. Don’t wait until the last day Do your Xmas shopping now ' r I ’HIS picture shows a f woman of Salvador, Central America, making tortillas. She would not be wasting her time doing this if she had access to the good things in our bak ery where we produce the Many Good Things to Eat upon which this community is feasting every day—bread, cakes, pies, doughnuts, cookies and other good things with the tasty flavor of the home kitchen. They look as good as they taste. Quality and cleanliness are the twin mottoes of this bakery at all times. A. Lodm dge
