from this county, Stump, Hales, Fioiuiin
and Hoffman left Senilis by steamer In
March last, intending to Ito overland hy
way id Yukon river and St. Micheala to
Cape Nome. In trving to cross Shelekoff
strait, north of fcndiak islands, they
were shipwrecked twice and had to n
turn to hodiak and will then remain
until a steamer passes that way to Dutch
Harbor, thence to Cane Nome. These
men decided after they escaped from
mpwreck nai the season was to tar ad
vanced to make the overland journey as
they might get caught in the break up
of the ice on the Yukon and after all
fail.

meantime the steamer McMlnnville is
being operated by the O. C. T. Com
pany. Hilda Hobson, the girt with a game
leg, who been working the east side of
the river for dollars, is getting
plenty of free puffs, She has a short
l'g, wslks with a crutch snd her tale of
woe is that she is "raising money to go
to business college." The police are
now "on" and she don't stay long in
one place.
Mart Scrafford, of Luckiamute pre
cinct, came to town Saturday. He esys
that the recent rains were worth many
a twenty dollar piece to the farmers
throughout the Willamette valley. The
motor line runs close to Mart s place
and is proving quite a benefit to the
people of that neighborhood and many
take advantage of the opportunity of
making a quick trip to town.
Closing exercises of the city schools
will take place on the 18th. Thete will
be held in the opera house. A small
admission fee of 10 cents will be charged
to pay c.'iienses and for the library
fund. Tbere will lie no graduating class
this year as a Tenth grade has been
added to the course and the plan of
giving diplomas to the Eighth grade has
been discontinued. '
Monday's Oregonian says that chick
ens commanded a high price all Winter
and Spring, but now the price is de
clining and there is a prospect that it
will get so low that almost anybody can
h'HHt on fried chicken. This calculation
is based on the fact that some 125 incu
bators have been sold to farmers in. the
Willamette Valley during the past Win
ter, and it is natural to suppose that a
vast amount of incubating has been done
and a large number of chickens hatched.
John Young called at the West Sidk
office a few days ago to correct a state
ment made by the Dallas Itemizer to
the effect that be had given a deed for
land to flattie Jones. He says he has
had no business transaction with the
lady whatsoever and is at loss to under
stand why the item was published un
less it was to do him an injury of some
nature. Probably the Itemizer meant
to say it was Eph Young who sold the
land.
A jolly birthday party was held at the
residence of Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, about
four miles north of this city, last Sun
day, It was in honor of Mrs. Rogers
and a fine time was had. Among those
those in attendance were: Mr. and Mrs.
Turnbull, Mr. Turnbull, sr.; Mrs At
kins and daughter Fay; Mr. and Mrs.
Newton; Mr. and Mrs. Dockstadter and
Mr, and Mrs. Stockton. Some of the
visitors enjoyed themselves so much
that they were unable to get back to
town on Sunday, ho remained over night
arriving home early Monday morning.
Harvey E. Lounshury, traveling
fre'ght agent of the Southern Pacific
passed through Independence Tuesday
morning, He states that the injury to
fruits by reason of recent cold weather,
is not nearly so bad as at first reported.
He says that the fruitgrowers estimute
that they will have a two-thirds prune
crop, and one-ttnru crop ot pears ana a
average yield of apples. It was reported
instead of a total failure or the peacu
yield in the vicinity of Ashland, it is
now estimated that the crop will yield
about 15 per cent. There will also be a
considerable quantity of prunes and
apples about Ashland.

Second Oregon was thoonly regiment to
enter the oily and receive the surrender
of the Siwnish army and arms. A
number of tine old h rouse cannon were
captured at that time. One of them was
brought home and this splendid old
bronso, cast In Hnsin more than a cen
tury ago, is now lieing made into souv
enir buttons by a committee of the
volunteers, and the buttons are being
sold for the benefit of the (und to erect
a handsome and artistic monument to
the memory of the soldiers of Oregon
who lost their lives In the Spanish and
Fillipino war. The button is made with
a button back (or men and boys snd a
pin back (or ladies and girls. The
buttons sell in any quantity at 25 cents

Cox At the family home, just across
the river from this city, on Sunday
evening, Mrs. Mary Cox, wife of John
Cox, departed this life. Deceased was
about forty-eight years of age and suf
fered from lung trouble. She did not
leave any children. The funeral took
place on Monday afternoon from the
Christian church, the interment being
In the Monmouth cemetery.
