The ueed of good roads is every day wore apparent and tuis wouid be a saving to our fanners of Ihoiisaudn of dollars yearly besides making farm life much more pleasaut. The action of our couuty court iu let tiug thecouuty printing aud job work to the low est bidder may be criticized by some, as the work is being done al such low figures as to leave scarcely any protit to the bidder, but it effects a great saving to the couuty, as last year on legal blauks alone the cost under , former priced would have been .'tX) while the amount paid was ouly about $150. Ou letter heads the saving was about 00. But that is not all the ad vantage gained to the couuty. The money is kept at home. Instead of sending back to tit Louis, or even to Portland $350 f r those two items the money wan all paid out to Polk couuty workmen. Another fact is that it improves the class of work in the priut mg offices of the county. Not long ago the letter heads of the county were en graved and priuted East, now by the county court furnishing the plates, that work can be done at home at less cost to the couuty. t'ounty warrants' cost ing $12 a thousand to engrave und print could be priuted at home for$.'i.5() a thousand provided the plates were furnished. The action of the county court is in the direction of economy aud also to encourage home industries. It has been suggested to the editor of this paer that the proper thing to do is to advocate a sugar beet factory at. Independance. Two years ngo this paper did bring before it's readers the many advantages of a sugai' beet factory, but the legislation in congress has been so averse to offering any iiicouragcni'iit' to such an industry that it is waste oi time and space In the paper to wnie about it now. Wait until our republi can congress gets full power ami if they do as the republican party has always done, advocate keeping the $117,000,000 we send abroad every year for sugar, at home, then is the proper time to urge upon our people to plant beets and erect sugar factories One of the worst farces of the courts was the releasing of C. A. Bowker, the Portland murderer, ou $500 bail, re cently. He was first found guilty of murder and sentenced to ten years in the penitentiary, he then appealed to the supreme court which granted a new trial. He is now released on bail. Of course nothing more will be done with him. His crime was of the moi-t heinious kind and for which he should have been hanged. Our courts of jus tice sometimes get decidedly lax in their duty. Let Justice prevail who ever may be the culprit. . According to the Ortifunian, Benator J. N. Dolph will have no trouble in be ing re-elected to the United Btutes senate. The senator has made an able and efficient member of congress dur ing his years of office, aud our legisla ture will act wisely In returning a man hat is already "onto the ropes." 1 Gompahy xTukuttii. veral wt the oltUvns. rf Monmouth, nmt at Ui Christian ehuMi last Mou (laJpvviilug, Hiyl peifiH'tod an organb nathit lo'difjhiJvlleve u sintering peo pie tNtir.Uirritlnl Wcntern KiUiwik.
