the county court. The people of
Independence naturally feel more
cordial towards the ofueials at Dai

with the state board of equalUatiou
because Multnomah couuty pays
such heavy taxes. There is no use
"kicking" Mr. Oinjonian. You
favored the repeal of the deduc
tions for indebtedness and mort
gage tax law, and now you are at
the mercy of the state of Oregon.
The farmers wanted the deduction
for indebtedness aud mortgage tax
law and still want it We have an
idea the Oinjonian will remain
silent on the question and allow the
present law to be repealed. When
the old one was in force it made but
little difference to the rich men of
Portland what the tax levy might
be, they could evade their taxes.
This year they cannot, and conse
quently are very indignant at the
state board for duing it sworn
duty.
When the Dallas ItemUer had
the contract for printing the bills
paid by Polk county through the
commissioners' court, it set it in
display style, used brevier and pica
type, and for a five inch list of bills
in nonpariel, charged for twentytwo
inches, and the county court paid
it It is safe to say it paid the
Itemizer $20 last year more than
it earned under the contract The
Itemizer man should look this up
and refund his overcharges.
The people of Oregou should til-
deed feel grateful to our state offi
cials who have so wisely and eco
