The truth is all were right and all were wrong. The Wwr Side believes in protection, West 8iiK believes in the populist ideas regarding monopliee aud legist tion by the people, and it believes in sound money, but it is tied to no party. Protection happens to be a republican measure therefore the West Side is republican, sound monev happens to be Cleveland's hobby therefore the W'wt 81PE is, that far. a Clevelaud paper, aud the land ideas and the legislative ideas of the populists happen to meet with our approval, hence we are BODulists. The Wist Siuk has positive convictions and you can tell where it stands, but it is not a partisan paper. - L i ' Baa Peutland should keep his shirt on about that tax roll, lie talks like a babe when he says the ' state board will raise the levy of Polk. lie should know that tbe state board is not yet in session. and that Polk's roll is still in the hands of the assessors. Do you seet Dallas Tranrtpt. Yes, we see. The West Side wants to see Polk county's tax roll as near perfect as possible, so that the state board may not raise it. If the county board is economically giving us a good assessment, we shall not complain. We are glad to know that it is not too late for the roll to be made more perfect Under the present law, this is a very important matter, and the West Side in calling attention to this subject, has done Polk county a great service, which will be rec ognized by the people when they BOO its true import Every school district, every city, and all of Polk county is vitally interested in this matter. The West Side is the only paper that has said one word in favor of a better assessment and it has said it none too soon. W have no apologies to make Bro, Snyder. For further particulars, we refer to the snmmary of Polk' taxes, published in this issue. THE Eoseburg Review appears to us somewhat inconsistaut on the silver question. It fires away at congress for repealing the Sherman law, and saying prosperity would return, and then in tbe next ed itorial column says that practically, the Sherman law will not be re pealed for two years yet, on account of tbe silver bullion being coined into dollars, which will require two years time. The 53d congress of the United States is in session. Among the prominent bills to be enacted will be admitting Arizona, New Mexico and Utah, to statehood; the tariff bill, the income tax, and the Ha waiian affair. Money is still piling np in the banks of New York. Nobody wants to use money or to make any ventures under "the change." Oregmian. The Eoseburg Review informs the republicans that the "republican editors who are so anxious to re deem Hawaii from 'nigger rule' should not be so distant in their so licitations for struggling civiliza tion. They appear never to remem ber that the native born citizens of this nation are constantly engaged in a bitter and unrelenting contest with brutal and ignorant African savages, who are numerically their superior, and who dominate and rule over them, in the very shadow of the stars and stripes." , The editor of the Review knows law is not enforced, and that there not a "bitter and unrelenting coutcst" There Is a vast difference between giving an American cltixeu the right of suffrage, and placing a profligate negress on a throne aud upholding her with American bay- oueta. It only shows the spirit of the kind of democracy represented by the finvw editor. Thank heaven, all democrats are not so unpatriotic. President Cleveland's message to congress, Monday, is very long, but eoutulns nothing of any great momeut It is noticeable that the repeal of the state bank tax is not tueutioued, nor the full instruction given Minister Willis.
