ance work, Gen. Neil Low.
Baron Liebig is quoted by Archdeacon
Farrar as saying that if one drank 750
gallons of best Bavarian beer, he would
get no more nutriment than from a live
pound loaf.—Union Signal.
Temperance people rejoice to note
that there is a steady increase of tem
perance members in the United States
Congress, and are much gratified that
Speaker Reid selected as chairman of the
leading House Committees, that of
Ways and Means, Representative Ding
ley, of Maine; ami Representative
Morse, another active temperanc advo
cate, chairman of the Committee on Al
coholic Liquor Traffic.
And now, following the guiding star
of Truth, an Indian presses to the
front of temperance ranks. Hear him :
“I regret very much to hear of so many
of our people causing so much trouble
and pain to those who are our friends;
am almost discouraged to hear of so
many being put in jail, all owing to the
liberty of getting whisky, which is ruin
to us all.” He then advises that his
people be instructed on theXsubject. ad
vised to gn to church, send their child
ren to school and teach them to work.
And we respond, God grant that the
wisdom of this red man may spread
through the ranks of his white brethren
until the terrible evil is blotted out.
