r,EVi COM IS ilBPtNFOR BUSINESS Medford Lumber Company Opens New Yards on Coiner of Third St. e:l anil S. P. Tracks. The Medford Lumber eompaify has completed nil preparations and has opened for business in this city, thus adding another firm to those engaged in business in Medford. Nothing has been overlooked in the preliminary work, and the company now has as complete a stock and as splendid an equipment as there is in the city. J, P. Cooley, with 30 years' experience in the lumber business, is the pro prietor of the new firm. The company has opened large yards at the comer of Third street and the S. P. tracks. A large two etory shed lias been erected, 160 by 90 feet in dimensions, as well as two warehouses for sash and doors, etc. It is planned soon to enlarge the main shed to lfiO by 170 feet. A complete stock of lumber and building material of all kinds has been laid in and. everything which a man could want in the building line can be supplied by this firm. The walls of Chinatown are placarded to day , with copies of a letter from Ngsha Chun, acting Chinese minis-- ter to Washington, urging Ihe Chi nese residents of this city to search for Leon Ling, who is accused of murdering. Elsie Sigel of New York. The letter is addressed to the "Chi nese people of San Francisco." THOUSANDS OF CHICKENS STOLEN ON WHITE RIVER SEATTLE, Wash., July 1. An or ganized bund of chicken thieves has been operating. :in the While River valley during the last few days, and 6000 fowls have been sojien. One farmer near Orilla lost 200 chickens in one nigvht, while another found his flock minus 127 members one morning. The chickens stolen are sold in Seattle and Tacoma. Surgeons .in attendance upon the five men scalded by the explosion of a boiler on the torpedobo'at destroyer Hull Tuesday believe that all the victims will recover. B. F. King, the fire man, whose injuries were at' first be lieved to be fatal, is resting comfort ably and the others ore improving. The cause of the accident can only bo conjectured in official navy yard circles, but it is generally believed that the tube exploded under a heavy jar caused by the vessel stopping to repair the damage to her steering gear. No steps toward an investi gation have yet been taken. SCHIVELY GIVEN UNTIL JULY 10 T CANSWER OLYMPIA, Wash., July 1. The senate this afternoon voted to allow State Insurance . Commissioner Schively until July 10 to file his an swer to the charges of impeachment. The state was given until July 14 to reply. The senate also fixed the date for the beginning of taking evidence in the impeachment proceedings as August 11. An adjournment will probably be taken this afternooa by both houses to July 10, and possi bly until some time in August. TYPEWRITER WORKS TO CLOSE DOWN UTICA, N. Y., July 1. Notice was posted in Hie Remington 'Typewriter works at Ilion-today that the estab lishment would be closed until fur-Ihei- notice. The works employs 2100 people and the pay roll is $30, 000 a week. ' Some time ago the company at tempted to introduce a machine for accomplishing a part of the work of aligning the letters on the typo bar of the machine. Ee it resolved by the city council of the city of Medford, Oregon: Whereas, there has lien filed with the city council of the city of Med ford a petition signed by more ban one-fifth of the qualified electors of said city, as shown by the vote cast at the last municipal election held in said city, petitioning that the boundaries of said city of Medford be altered and new territory included therein as hereinafter set forth, it is therefore resolved: That the fol lowing question be submitted to the electors of said city, and also to the electors residing in the territory hereinafter set forth: Shall the boundaries of the city of Medford be . altered by including therein the following described terri tory, to-wit: Commencing til a point on the present boundary line of the, city of Medford, in section nineteen (19), township thirty-seven 37), range one (1) west of Willamette meridian, in Jackson county, Oregon, duo west from the northwest corner of.
