According to the ; advice received by looal packing houses and ..commission merchants, j this season promises to be an off one lor all varieties of fruits, except cherries, which will yoild a good crop, i The ycild of prunes, apples, pears ' ana all Kinas oi iruus meiuaing strawberries loganberries raspberries etc., will bo small. With the excep tion of smnll fruits, which are sadly it need of moisture there is no ac ounting for the general backward condition. 1 The same is true on hay and grains j f all kinds with the possible excep tion of Fallsown wheat, which shows good growth and will yield a fair; crop. Spring-grown wheat is suffer- j g severely from the long continued dry spell, which was practically bro- j ken by the recent showers. The , pring-grown wheat is scarcely out of the ground in many localities, and . f a good Tain does not come soon will not be cut at all, either for grain or hay. The hay crop is not show ing up very well and there as al-: ready asuranccs that the crop will full fnr short of the average. The prune trees in all sections of : this part of the valley, and in the western portion of the stnte in gene-, rnl have a good setting of fruit but while some of the prunes havo kept pnee with the season in growth 'and developement a large percentage of them are still smnll and sinned in growth. If these latter, drop later in the season, it is predicted that there will not be more than a hnlf :i crop of prunes this season. The avoruce crop for the slate is be tween 20.000.000 and 20.00,000 pounds. Reports from the southern portion of the state indicate that conditions are even worse there than in the vnllcy. eru Pacific railway station in this city. Thoy will contribute the funds for the purchase of three huge flower pots or vases of stone, which have been ordered from a Portland firm. Tho vases will bo more than two feet high and about 32 inches in diameter. They will bo sot on pedestals al pro minent places in the park. The park is now completed, the cost being something like $4500, tho cost boing jointly born by the Commercial club and the railroad company. The ladies of the auxiliary of the club are now raising money to orect a $1000 drinking fountain at the head of Willamet street, near tho pass enger depot. "INFERNAL MACHINE" A BULLFROG IN A BOX RENOVATING THE ASHLAND EXHIBIT NEW YOHK, June 2. A strange noise isucd from a small box which a stranger had requested him to koop temporarily load Antanio Sarinella, a prosperious shoe dealer at Belle ville, N. J., to suspect the package t contain a dynnmite bomb, and es pecially as he hnd received threat ening letters. The police were sum moned and after the box had been doused in water it was opened. If. contained nothing hut a two-pound bullfrog, from which tho alarming noise hnd emannted. I ASHLAND, June 2. The exhibit i building at the depot has reoently j undorgone improvements in several i important particulars.. It ahs been j painted both inside and out, new I shelves added and it is expected that early this week lincqleiim will be laid ! on the floors, so that taking alto gether both building and contonls will I muko a much bettor showing. I It seems that the land on which j tho structure is situated is leased from the railroad company year by year, but for soverul years past the covenant has been more honored in tho breach than tho observance. The lenso expires this month and the com pany stands ready to cheerfully re new it without question. If the build ing is enlarged it is proposed to ex tcdn 20 feel on tho west, but this is a contingency not to be undertaken at present. There is a well-founded rumor cur rent that the Civil Improvement club will lake over the control of the pro perly at an early day. and if so, the lady patronesses of the institution will give the attention it deserves, for it will be made an attraction worthy tho visit of the army of tour ists to and fro. A "flower girl" will undoubtedly be installed on the pre mises, the building will be kept open more of the time, and greater atten tion paid to the display ' of floral speciment and fruits peculiar to their season. These advantages, supple mented by a bureau affording infor mation regarding the city and its im mediate vicinity, will make of the Exhibit building a pruotioal as well as ornamental exponent of publiaity Unit can accomplish more and better results.
