GETTING READY TO
PAVE IN ASHLAND
ASHLAND, June 2. Officiate o
the Warren Construction company,
which has the contract for paving

A have been in Ashland the past few
days taking preliminary survey of the
field and will return in a few days' to
looate the most convenient supply of
rock avnilubte for base and get
ready for active operations, which it
is hoped to got under way by June
15. Considerable heavy machinery
has to be assembled here for the job.
The curb contractors are only wait
ing for orders to begin their part of
the job which is preliminary to the
paving.
The work of construction horc will
be in charge of Mr. Cnpelund as sup
erintendent for the Warren Construe
tiocnmpnny, while the supervision
on behalf of the city will be give by
Mr. Hong, from Albany who has ar
rived and wil rejiort for duty tomor
row. The beginning of actual operations
in street paving promisis to mark an
epoch iu the history of Ashland and
it is predicted that the completion of
of the first contract will only be the
beginning of such work here. So

can Railway Association is wrestling
with the problem of the enormous
loss caused by the car surplus. That
the problem has bocome serious is
shown by the statement thai the rail
roads now have a sufficient numbor
of idle cars to carry between 4,000,
000,000 nnd 5.000.000.000 tons of
freight one mile each day.

The regular summer school of the
Southern Oregon State Normal
School will open Juno 28, 1U09, and
close August 10. Classes wili be
foruied in muthods of teaching and
in nil the branches of study required
in examination for Btato and ceunty
papers. Tho school will be conducted

Scoy, members of the ncrmnl school
