('.ontinuH frcin pngf) 1.) lumber munufactnred, so that it will not be uecessnry to depend entirely on outside shipments. , The first holdings reached by the Pacific & Eustem uro those of the Crater haku Lumber company. Upon there uro n number of sugar pine trees, veritable giunts of the forost, which contain from 25,(100 to 30,000 feet each of lumber, sufficient to completely fill the largest furniture curs lauded to their fullest cupaeity. Their holdings eompriso 15,000 acres in a solid body, which is on practi cally level ground, nnd it is estimat ed that this timber can be logged for $2.50 a thousand feet. In compari son it will cost from $5 to $8 to log ging in most other holdings on the coast. Comparison With Fruit. Eifty per cent of this land, after the timber is cut, will bo cleared and put under cultivation, nnd sold to employes in smull tracts. Other ex tensive holdings in the timber belt ulso have mills upon, nnd manufac turing will begin nt once upon the completion of tho road. When it is considered that tho en tire fruit crop of the liogue liiver valley for tins yenr lsostimaled nt 000 carloads, or nu average of three care per day, it will be seen what n great tonnage in comparison there will bo from tho timber belt. If only 200,000 feel of timber n day nro cut, it will mean an average of five cards. The present capacity of the mills is approximately 500,000 feet, which would mean five or six times tile ton nage furnished by tho entire orchard urea at present. Who Allen Is. J. It. Allen, the purchaser of the Pacific & Enstcrn, is a prnctienl rail road man of long experience. Until recently he had charge of the Pan ama railroad, previous to Hint ho was president of tho Union Depot com pany at Spokane, and before that di vision superintendent of the Grout Northern nnd chief dispatcher of tho Northern Pacific. IIo is a big man in Wull street anil is connected with several railroad properties, ns well us being prominent in muniing circles. He represented Robert S. Towno in tho nnrchaso of tho Hluo Ledgo mine, and it is presumed that Mr. Towne is nsscoeiuted with him in the purdiaso of the Pacific! & Knstern, and that the roud will bo extended to the Win1 l.cdge copper, mine, but there is no authority for such a statement. j Coal Revenues. I In addition to the timber belt, the j ! road can nlsn receive a revenue from . j handling coal from the local coal j i field about Medford. Colonel ,). Y. 1 Miindy. who is developing the I ( 'mines, estibates that the output of i coal will total 2000 tons a day with I in three vein's. Part of this coal can be used to operate a smelter at Hie ' Itlue l.ciU'C mine. The coal itself will I l'nriiili tonnage sufficient tn justify nn investment niiiiiv linn' the cost of building u railroad. Harrimati Co-Operates The most hopeful sign in connec tion with the sale of the Pacific & Eastern is the active en-operulion of the llarriinan system, which has agreed to furnish the rails necessary on long-term payment. This is the' first lime thai any effort has been made by the llarriman people to ac tively co-npelale ill the development of territory tributary to their main line, and indicates that Mr. llarriman was mi re in ibe .tnteinenls that he : lm'de to Hie people of Oregon, when ni asserted that he was willing and j'"1""" '" development of the ' s,,llr "' ""' l''- tienl and ,H.ssible way.
