West,-the local ''champion, hns received word that Gotch may stop here and wrestle a bout with him. West was to go against Gotch at Portland last Tues day evening, but the delay in train service rendered it impossible for him to arrive there in time. He was one of a trio scheduled to tackle the champion, who had an easy time han dling Eddie O'Connell and Jack Grant the Intter a big, burly grappler. ' When the world's champion was introduced in Portland he was greet ed with a storm of applause, and those present were quick in recog nizing the wonderful strength dis played by the Iowa giant. O'Con nell was the first grappler to wrestle with Gotch's hulk of bono, sinew and musole, and the champion handled the Multnomah club instructor as a cat would a mouse. O'Connell and Grant were the only grapplers to ap pear against , Gotch. The others scheduled refused to go, on. Ill handling O'Connell Gotch be came most playful, and tossed the clever welterweight about like a sure thing man juggling peas in a shell game. In fact,. Gotch did every thing with O'Connell except whirl him about his fingers ns a drum major , would his baton. He even went so ; fas ns to lake off OVonnell's shoe and puddle him. After O'Connell had done his best to stave off the big fellow. Grant was introduced. When he sized up along side of Gotch the equality in size and weight led Ihc crowd to believe that there would be something doing. When the Iownn got into action, however, the 'JOO-ponnder was handled just about ns easily as O'Connell hnd been. In fact. Gotch picked him up, asked the crowd where to put him, and then carried him over to the des ignated corner and set his shoulders almost to the mat. Before Joe Ac ton, who acted as referee, could call the fall, Gotch released his man and went at it again. The champion slipped from one h"ld into another in such a speedy manner thut one could not keep track of all the different grapples he tried. In each instance he would put his opponent over just far enough to demonstrate that a fall could be had and he would switch holds and re pent the performance.
