Mr. Murphy is a part ner of Colonel Muiutv, and was in strumental in purchasing the local mines and organizing the developing companies. TO AMEND CHARTER ON 10 TH OF MAY Election Called for Next Month on Matter of Extending Water Mains in City. The city council at u meeting on Tuesday evening decided to allow the people of the city to vote on the mat ter of amending the charter so that the council could issue-bonds to pro vide for tho extension of the water mains within tho city limits. The ilection was called for May 10. At the same time the matter of providing taxation for street sprink ling will be voted upon, as will the matter of tho right of eminent do main, giving the city power to coa lman rights of way for water mains, as it has the power to do with sewer mains. Emil DeKoboam was sold $11000 of city bonds. Holly street was ordered graded between Tenth and Thirteenth streets. HUGHES MAY DECLINE TO SELL STOCK FOR JOB WASHINGTON, D. C, April 21. Mcllingcr, to whom so much of tho credit for the splendid showing is due, leaves July 1 for Portland, where he hns been culled to the Woodlawn Christian church. Ho will be succeeded here by Rev. Q. K. Berry, formerly editor of the Pacific Christian, the const organ of the church. P. E. niackinan, an old resident of Ashland, is visiting friends in the city. The civil service examination for mail carriers was held hero yester- dav. Nine applicants in the class. The new delivery service will begin June 15. Mrs. John Prnder left yesterday for Summer lake to join her bus baud, who is inspecting his cattle ranch. She expocts to he absent about three wekes.
