THE MEDFORD DAILY TRIBUNE, MEDEORI), ORFJON, TUESDAY. MARCH "0, 1909. Medford Daily Tribune Official Paper of the City of Medford. Published everv evcnirm except Sunday. It is always slurring this city ami the people in it, as well as all soul hern Oregon. This is the reason it tells ils readers I hat ihe Portland Northwest league team is t raining in Ashland, and publishes a piel lire of the olavers in Medford, taken in Medlord, labeled as ''Portland players imw training in Ashlan ! The monarch of uiossbai k newspapers knows that Ash land is on the map, for a large portion id' its jaundii editorial column has been used to villify the normal school It does not know and refuses to learn that Ashland has a high school, but constant Iv reiterates its malicious false hoods about Ihe normal being used as a high school. Ashland has recent I v attracted the Oregoniau s atten tion in another way the road to its pocketbook conscience Nearly Km of ils Ashland subscribers stopped the paper because of' its mendacity. All of its subscribers ought to have stopped, and stay stopped. Only lack of compeitioii prevents it. Perhaps if Medford people should boycott this bible o the Al bilckle col Ice brigade, ll would learn that Aledlord is on the iuai. The experiment is worth trying. No one ex perls the Oregoniau to boost .southern Oregon. It never boosts anything. It; is retrogressive, and reactionary, and knocks everything, even ils own home city. It has sound ed the anvil chorus so loudly on everything worth whilt that it lias lost its lnlluence, and its support spells deleat. Jiut a boycott of its local readers would certainly teach il that Medford was on the map, in the only way il can learn anything that is through its purse-sl rings. SKCUL'IXc; A UAIUlOAl). Colonel J. F. Mundy is drilling for oil near Medford. Colonel Mundy is seeeess fully opening up the Kogue River valley coal fields, pronounced by government geol ogists one of the most extensive coal deposits on the con tinent. The coal speaks for itself. The success of either of these enterprises means as much to the country, perhaps more, than resources now developed. Colonel Mundy is an experienced oil operator, lie has been a familiar figure in many oil territories of the east and south, lie knows his business-thoroughly. Medford is lucky in having alt rai led his attenl ion. For years oil experts have declared that surface indi cations favored an oil territory, but no one before had the nerve to risk his money in extensive development work. No effort would have been made for years if dependent upon local capital, for Oregon capital wants a sure thing and takes no chances. Xo one can Idl u hat exists a thousand feet under the surface, and few dare to take the risk. It costs about .),0ll() o sink the first well, including cost of drilling machine. Colonel Mundy has the money and the nerve, and he is the type of man who does not know failure. 1 f he is successful i 1, ,,,.,(. it means the transformat ion of Med lord into a eit . Colonel Mundy has asked for no mone and for no assistance from Medford in his enterprises. I ie has brought many capitalists to the valley and made extensive invest ments, lie has, however, asked that Medford assist him m securing terminal grounds and right of wav into the eit v ior a railroad to the coal mines. It is to the best interests of the citv that such a road center here, and the least that can he done is to aid in secur ing both road and terminal, and that at once. .!- E. KM YA KT Pri.lei. .1- A.
