William Dolan, under Henleiicp to he
bunged for the murder of Frank Whit
taker of Klko enmity, made the above
appeal today to Acting (lovenmr Dick

board of pardons,

shot to death Frank Whittakcr in an
abandoned cemetery at Klko sevenil
months ago and was sentenced to be
hanged for the crime. At his trinl he
gave a full account of tlie crime, there
having been no witnesses, and staled
that he felt justified in the murder be

LUNG TROUBLE IS
OHIO'S WORST FOE
COLFMIU'S, ., Feb. 12. Startling
figures covering tho ravages of con
sumption and pulmonary diseases in
Ohio are given out by the new state
bureau of vital statistics in its first
roport. The bureau has been in opera
tion less than a month.
Tho first mortality report issued by
State Registrar Watkins shows that
lung diseases far outstrip all other
causes of death. The report covers
17l9 deaths during the last ten days
of December. Of this number an even
L'OO wero f mm tuberculosis, of which
Ifiy were pulmonary. Closely follow
ing is pneumonia, which caused 171
deaths. Ninety deaths were due to
cancer.

TARIFF CALLED MARCH 10
WASHINGTON. Feb. 12. The spe
cial session of the (list congress which
will be called to revise the tariff will
begin March Dt, if an agreement reach
ed by Speaker Cannon and Senators

the approval of President-elect Taft,
and no doubt is expressed that the date
will prove satisfactory to him.
Speaker Cannon is desirous that the
session shall begin as soon as possible
in order that the disturbances of busi
ness conditions incident to the revision
of the tariff shall be cut as short an
possible.
Sereno Payne, chairman of the ways
and menus commit to1, has assured cm
gressiona! leaders who were interested j
in fixing the date for tho session that
the tariff bill will be completed by the
committee March 4.

FROM FIERY DSATH
NKW YORK. Feb. 12. The barking
of a collie dog owned by Ore to (Jiolito.
proprietor of. tho Unto o Kurop. on
West Ninth street, probably saved the
lives of a dzen giots who were asleep
in the hotel when fire broke out in tlo
basement early tMav. fiiolito. who
slept on the second floor with hi wife
and three children, when awakened by
the dog's barking, found the hall fill
ing with nmoke. An alarm was sent in
and the fire was checked. Several of
the guests were overcome by moke nnd
had to be carried to the street.

NINE PRISONERS ESCAPE
FROM SING SING PRISON
NKW YORK. Feb. 1 2. Paul Kelly,
the motorman who was pursued across
the continent to San Francisco and
sent to Sing Sing prison for his share
in the Ninth avenue 1 wreck at the
Fifty-third stree curve in September.
l!Mif), escaped today from the temporary
prison at Hear mountain, across the riv
er from Sing Sing. With Kelly went
4 'huMea F. McCarthy, formerly a New
York policeman, who was serving a
term for extortion.
This makes a total of nine prisoners
who have escaped from Dear mountain
prison barracks.

a barber, was acquitted last night by a
jury of the charge of manslaughter.
Coquette WIs charged with having caus
ed the death of William A. King at
South Seattle on November 20, DliK,
by a blow of his fiat following a dis
pute over a card game.
Coquette stated on the witness stand
that he merely pushed King away from
him, the latter falling and striking his
head on the pavement.
