Last store GOVERNMENT TO FIGHT PESTS 'VS'WABHINOTON, De. ' 18.A . " (taiga against the pear thrips In Call ''" fornia ia to be conducted next spring in tbs Bantu Clara, San Lcamun, Sac lamento and Ban Joaquin valleys by ta bureau of etomology, United Statea department of agriculture. Four mou Bare already been tent to California to be on the scene wben tho troubleiome little Insect comes out of the ground and faatens itsolf on the blossoms of the aprilot, poach, pear and prune treoi. The work ia to begin in a systematic campaign of spraying tho troes and blossoms as soon as the thrips mako its appearance in the early Bprlng, and thoy will make experiments to determine the - best way to attack the insect that is threatening such damage to the fruit crop of tho Pacific coast. The insect derives its name, "pear thrips,"' bocause it was first noted in alarming extont on tho blossoms of pear treoe, but it attacks all tho fruit trees of California with impartiality, and it ia doing its worst damage now to tho cherry and apricot trees, according to the experts who have been sent to Cal ifornia to investigate. Spraying Is Ineffective. Spraying has been found to be an ineffective method of attacking the pest, because it attaches itsolf to the blossoms of the trees as soon as it hatches out, and a spray solution strong enough to kill the inesct usually kills the blossom. ; ' But, the insect enters the ground dur ing the last two weeks of March and apparently stays there the groator part of the year. It is here that tho scien- Beta, who hare boon sont to California, hope to do their best work against tho pests. It was learned hero today that additional appropriations of $15,000 will b asked for at this session of congress " for the express porposo of fighting the thrips in California. The congressmen from Orogon will also ask for an appropriation of 10,- 000 to be expended in fighting the cod- ling moth in southeastern Oregon.
